eco alternatives to Gazebo weights?

KatyMac · 25/09/2019 21:52

I'm doing a market, I have a Gazebo - I need Gazebo weights, which appear to be plastic to fill with water or nylon to fill with sand

Is there a ore eco version? Can't use pegs

Hessian sand bags?

TheABC · 25/09/2019 23:27

We have used heavy timber to good effect.

parietal · 25/09/2019 23:39

re-use old water bottles?

KatyMac · 26/09/2019 07:40

Sand bags are good
Heavy wood? How did you attach?
Large water bottles? Great, what sort of size?

If I was going to use water bottles, I'd use the biggest I could get. The sort found on top of office water coolers, for example.

Yes. - I think you're right

I wonder how I can get some

DD has just pointed out DH has some weightlifting eights so they might work

Do you think 4kgs per leg will be enough for a 13ft/4m gazebo?

OP posts:
ConFusion360 · 26/09/2019 21:54

No!

4kg is nothing. I reckon you would need 20kg on each corner to be safe. You never know when a gust will come along.

KatyMac · 26/09/2019 23:59

Ok so that means his big weights - I got be able to move then

So a rethink - I wonder if I can get water on site?

I certainly can't lift 20kgs tbh I would struggle to lift 4 x 5 per leg - I don't have much -any- stamina

Hmm

KatyMac · 27/09/2019 14:04

Hmm he has 8x 4.4 lbs (2kgs), 2x 10 lbs (4.5kgs) 2x2.5kgs and 2x 1.25 kgs

So that isn't even 2 legs (If my maths is right) poop!

I think you need to use the proper gazebo weights, plastic or not. If you’re in a public place, which I assume you will be, then the tent needs to be properly secure. You can’t risk a gust of wind blowing your gazebo away and hitting someone.

If you check the weather and it’s not going to rain do you need the gazebo at all?

KatyMac · 27/09/2019 16:44

I will cos I'll need to create a 'changing room' in it

I won't buy un-necessary plastic - I will re-use old ones or improvise

I have worked out I can't use water filled ones as I couldn't carry them to empty them

I need smaller weights that can be moved in stages

But the proper gazebo weights aren’t unnecessary.. I get the avoiding single use plastics, but buying items that will last years and years and do the job properly is ok in my book.

If you are in a public place you have a duty of care to those around you. Using properly designed safety equipment will protect you if something were to do wrong.

KatyMac · 27/09/2019 18:19

They come in plastic filled with sand or water or metal

or prefilled plastic or metal

so no need to buy new surely? second hand or something similar is fine - people use the large water bottles willed with water but I can't I am too disable to move them so I need to think creatively

Aiming for 20kgs a leg (even though sites sell 15kgs per leg ones)

Flying gazebos are bloody dangerous and I have seen many take off in a gust.

The thing about the proper weights is that they are made to attach or fit properly on the gazebo.

It’s single use plastic that is the problem. Not something used for years and can then be recycled.

EagleRay · 29/09/2019 11:52

Do the market organisers have any rules in place about weights? I've done markets locally and the regulations were 25kg per leg

KatyMac · 29/09/2019 12:12

I emailed the venue a couple of days ago and I am waiting

They are sold between 10 kg & 30 kg per leg so there must be a formula/rule per square metre of 'roof' or something

I wouldn't consider not having weights at all - under any and when I have been on grass for social use I have always weighed it down/tied it to building structures as well as pegging it out

But I haven't used it on pavement/concrete before

But I won't buy new - second hand will do - I have been offered a loan until I can find what I want second hand
