changing bed setup for bad back

So.... I have disc problems in my back which has meant sleeping on my campbed has become tricky as can't sleep on my back, need to sleep on my side and I find the metal frame is uncomfortable when I bend my legs up. Have been considering a SIM on top of campbed - has anyone done this and if so is it enough padding to mean you can side sleep and get legs onto the metal bar without discomfort? Last time we camped I went back to an airbed as it meant I could sleep on my side but they are such a pain to put up and cold. Would like to return to my campbed but sleeping flat on back is just no longer an option! Camping this weekend and looking for advice :)

I don’t like air beds or camp beds for the reasons you describe and both give me back ache because if the general sag to the heaviest point.

I use a SIM in the ground: overall flat support with a squad but where your body presses down.

Lots of people do like a SIM on a camp bed, but I have heard many ‘tried everything ‘ campers rave about the combination of the Decathlon inflatable camp bed with slats, with a good SIM on top.

They did still have them out to try in the shop a couple of weeks ago.

@MildThing thanks for your response. In terms of your SIM on the ground approach, do you find you can side sleep with this arrangement? How thick is your SIM? Thanks for the decathlon inflatable slat bed tip, I will have a look!

My new SIM is 7.5Cms. On the ground. But I managed happily with 2.5Cms for ages but I am a bit spartan in my camping style.

People seem to want 10Cm SIMS but fir me that is too expensive and too bulky in my car.

Decathlon are good at practical demonstration in store, they let people take their tents in and show them how to re-fold pop ups etc, so I am sure they would inflate one of the camp beds for you.

That's helpful, thank you. Maybe I will look at a 7.5cm sim
