Compressing a double sleeping bag

I love my double sleeping bag but apart from the double SIM it's the biggest thing we take camping. Does anyone have any ideas of how to store it smaller? Can I get straps to pull the bag in tighter?

Take a duvet instead? We lays ours flat st the bottom of the roof box and put heavier stuff on stop to flatten them (we bring 4 single duvets as well as thick wool blankets).

But I love it it's the best sleeping bag but I guess with snugglyness come hugeness. I don't think my duvet is much smaller to be honest. I think we will have to get a roof box. How do you pack them? I'm only five foot.

This is a good alternative to the roof box for short people! www.amazon.co.uk/Hatch-Bag-Car-roof-box-alternative/dp/B01N1KIJMN?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Can you squidge it down in one of those compression bags?

Your duvet will be half the volume as I assume your sleeping bag is the width and length of a double duvet folded over?

But you’ll need layers as extra to sleep on as it’ll be cold otherwise!

Alternatively, don’t roll up the sleeping bag. Use it to line the boot and stick everything else on top to squash it down.

How do we pack our roof box? Roof box has all of our bedding (duvets, pillows) plus wool blankets and folding chairs and tables. I line the bottom with a wool blanket, then fold the duvets in to fit the roofbox, then put a wool blanket over the top, then all the heavy stuff on the top of that. It squishes it all down.

these are the blankets - you wouldn’t want them directly on you, but over a duvet they’re incredible at keeping the heat in and I really notice it if they come off on a cold night!! Much much better than fleece. You can also use them under you (with a fleece on top so you don’t get itchy) for extra insulation.
Wool is a natural insulator and that’s why soldiers used them!

Oh - I misread the how you pack a roof box. I stand on a chair at home and on the car seats at the campsite. I’m 5’4”

You shouldn't really compress a sleeping bag too much as it will ruin it.

I don’t think compressing for a journey is that bad - that’s why they have compression bags. Just for travel only. Rest of the time, you shouldn’t store them compressed.

These are good ideas, I think I will lay it flat in the boot, I have a old duvet cover I can use to protect it. Then all the other crap should squash it down.

I don't think we need the blankets as with the SIM we are so warm, it's just the bulk. We used to have a seven seater and now just an estate and really feel the loss of space. First world problems hey Blush

I saw the mighty Vango Aurora Grande (brilliant sleeping bag!) reduced to a wafer in a picture on a camping Facebook group - a vacuum pack bag was the secret. People also compress clothes and all soft packing in this way.

But I have no idea if this means you just use all the space you have saved to pack a vacuum cleaner? Or if you need EHU?
