Thinking of ditching this camping lark - noise!

I think I’m done. Unless you tell me what we’re doing wrong.

We’ve had a 5m Bell for years and we love it except noise. We’ve had great times (ironically) in spaced out places like pubs with camping but anytime we tried be on a site we have such issues with noise it’s hell.

I won’t bore with the backstories but this time we have driven 7 hours in a hired motorhome to a remote beautiful place (to see if that makes a difference) to a site with a ‘strict’ 10.30 curfew (signs all over the place) but at midnight last night i was still listening to next doors shitty music and roaring laughter for night no.2. night before they packed in at 1.30am and kids have been in a grumpy mood through tiredness all day. We are in the end of a run and they are last so we’re the only poor saps being kept awake. Prior to now we’ve had snorers, dog barkers, and the most frequent one late night family packs who jibber jabber and roar with laughter till stupid hours. Even inside their tents or caravans you can hear it all as the windows are open?

I come away for some peace and always with such high hopes and always so dissapointed!

Earplugs fall out and hurt and the kids can’t wear them? They’re just as awake as us at the moment!

I just don’t understand why people can’t realise the noise they are making!!

How does everyone else cope?

Sounds reasonable to me, Rottnest, and worth a try.

Where is it you are thinking of going, by the way? Wink

RottnestFerry · 08/08/2019 12:41

Where is it you are thinking of going, by the way.

Not sure yet. There's a couple of midget infested sites in Scotland and Mid Wales that sound interesting.

ReasonedCamper · 08/08/2019 19:04

Never found midgets a problem when camping but midges can be nasty. I think you should try Billing Aquadrome. Go there, that sounds best. Or Shell Island if it’s a Bank Hol?

ElspethFlashman · 08/08/2019 20:37

STEVE, YOUVE SHIT YERSELF, OH MY FUCKING LIFE ITS STILL COMING

Omg I'm dead. I'm weeping here. 😂😂😂😂😂

DippyAvocado · 08/08/2019 20:43

If you have EHU, white noise is your friend. You can buy white noise machines, or our electric coolbox does a pretty good job! It won't block out really loud music but does drown out voices.

Lovemusic33 · 09/08/2019 21:19

I think it’s a bit hit and miss but I think a site with a beach nearby is always going to be busy. We camped last weekend down Devon but half an hour from the coast, the site we stayed on had a 10pm noise ban, it was very quiet and wasn’t very busy. We go to sites that just have toilets and showers on site (no entertainment or bar).

hazeyjane · 09/08/2019 21:30

Last year when we went camping, I stepped out of the tent to see a small child stood on top of a stack of hay bales with a fucking vuvuzela. The little poppet was quite the vuvuzela master....we ended up going home early.

parrotonmyshoulder · 09/08/2019 21:40

We’re generally lucky I think. Mega expensive campsite in Devon last weekend was SO quiet, I worried that we might be the noisy ones (when DS was sick in his sleeping bag).
Our usual style is very small, campfires and dogs allowed, composting toilets or otherwise basic. These are usually quiet unless unlucky enough to come across the type of parents who encourage a lot of free expression. I had to intervene with a 5 year old and pen knife last year.

Ski4130 · 10/08/2019 14:03

Fforest Fields in Powys, they’ve got a strict no noise after 1030 rule, and in the 4 years we’ve been going there, I’ve never heard anyone breaking it, it’s s blissfully quiet site. Nichalston Farm in the Gower is also a lovely quiet site.

We went to Bosworth Water Park recently and I was shocked by how noisy and inconsiderate some of the people there were. It’s put me off busier sites.

Ski4130 · 10/08/2019 14:04

Oh, and we actively avoid sites with entertainment and clubhouses, as they seem to come with a side helping of noisy campers.

Alabasterangel6 · 10/08/2019 23:03

Only just come back to this (and my own bed) but thank you!!

The initial site (Barr that one noisy twunt) was glorious. Had a good chat with other campers and the owners and I do believe we were unlucky. It was as remote as you could have got and zero facilities at all, beach to ourselves and just glorious.

We did a few other one night stops - a motorhome only place in Argyll which was 8 pitches and the silence was breathtaking, on the side of an tidal loch with an award winning pub within 10 minutes walk. And (the amazing bit) I woke up in the night to hear a nightingale singing. Just perfect.

And another stop in a huge place near Lockerbie just to break a long drive. We pulled in and thought ‘shit’ .....hundreds of vans and pitches, a pub, and our neighbours had both pitched wrongly leaving us with a hard standing but no green. Given it was 5pm and one side was nowhere to be seen and the others were out in a row in their seats with a tin in every hand, a fag in the other and a dog on a string in their third we decided not to pursue the argument. And you know? We had an brilliant pub meal and total silence so who knows. And I opened the van door at breakfast to find a heron waiting to be fed!

If anyone wants the names of the sites PM me.

Home happy and clean but missing the outdoors fresh air Sad

Ahhhhh. A happy ending! Glad you had fun.

Ellapaella · 11/08/2019 09:15

I can't stand noisy drunk people either - it's breathtaking how inconsiderate people can be. We have only had this experience on one occasion, made all the worse by the fact the site was right next to the A66 so traffic noise was horrendous. We didn't choose this campsite, it was a group trip arranged by someone else.
We tend to only use camping and caravan club sites and have never had a problem with noise in any of them.

CottonSock · 11/08/2019 09:19

I've pretty much given up camping as I'm so sensitive to noise, but try silicone ear plugs. They are a life changer. Don't fall out as sticky.

CircleCircleUnderOver · 11/08/2019 09:41

I'm dying to know what the beachfront site was!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/08/2019 11:38

I read the reviews on UKCampsite very carefully and we are lucky in that we've not been kept awake once.

We had one small group of people who were noisy on our regular campsite once. They asked them to be quiet, they asked again and the third time they chucked them out. Super strict but oh so so quiet Smile

TheoriginalLEM · 11/08/2019 11:51

Not rtft but we have just returned from a camping and caravan club site and it was bliss. I was less than enthusiastic about my camping holiday this year due to the very reason you describe in your OP.

Maybe we got lucky but there was a very different vibe on this site. There was a small play area but a fair few families. You could hear a pin drop after dark.

I've always tried to avoid sites that allow groups but still seem to fall foul of noise. Not rowdy groups but families with adjoining tents just generally enjoying a few drinks etc. Trouble is, that's not what i want to listen to.

This site didn't allow campfires and I believe this factored majorly so whereas weve always opted for sites that allow camp fires we may choose not to go there in future.

I feel your pain op

OakDining · 12/08/2019 18:12

We’ve given up camping in the UK for the same reasons. I definitely think there’s a gap in the market for campsites which are actually quiet.

Still go in France though as it’s a completely different atmosphere. Although you still get the odd annoying people - normally Brits
