RAIN!

We've booked a lovely little campsite in Northumberland for Sunday - Sunday.

Forecast looks absolutely terrible.

This is first time camping with our 16 month old. How on earth are we going to put the tent up and take it down in the pissing rain? Whilst semi-looking after her? Everything will be wet and soggy. Night time temperatures are fairly low... ugh!

DP is saying we should cancel and not go. I was so looking forward to it (not the rain, just camping and being somewhere else). We can go anywhere in the country but the weather is shocking for next week.

How awful will it be?

Well, I think you leave DD in her car seat (If you can park on site) or buggy with rain cover while you put the tent up. And then just make the best of it - as long as you all have waterproofs then it will be fine.
The forecast doesn't look so bad on the attached.

If you can cancel without losing your money, you could look at options like Airbnb or a hotel instead, so you are better protected from the weather, or see if there are any last minute deals somewhere with better weather abroad, assuming you all have passports.
There are some indoor things to do in Northumberland, too, if it rains. Cragside House is worth a visit, ditto Alnwick Castle, and the huge stock at Barter Books, the second hand bookshop in what was Alnwick station, and you could spend a day in Newcastle.
If you’ve got wellies and waterproofs, the scenery of moors and beaches is stunning even in the rain.
Any UK holiday carries the risk of rain- you always need to have contingency plans! Good luck.

I've camped in all sorts... don't cancel!! The weather report is often wrong!!

Once your tent is up, then you can just chuck the essentials in it and then sort out. Once it's up, your little one can play inside, get a couple of toys out or whatever.
Look up indoor activities, cheap places to eat out. Take easy 'one pot' meals and snacks like cuppa soups etc. So if it is bad, you don't have to be out too long cooking something.

Take kitchen roll, extra tarpaulin if you have it, wellies etc. Books and stuff for Lo to do.

DH and I don't have waterproofs as we tend to just avoid the rain and go to indoor places 😂

When I say camping I sort of really mean DIY glamping - we have a king size full height inflatable mattress, duvets, a full kitchen and a 6 man inflatable tent!

We can cancel without losing any money which is all the more reason to think about doing that but I wonder if it might be character building? Or maybe I'll end up murdering DP 😂

We can cancel without losing any money

I would do this!

Paperdolly · 26/07/2019 09:09

Don’t cancel. The weather reports are very often wrong. If it says rain this could be for 10 minutes and the rest of your holiday could be dry.

Look on it as an adventure and something to look back on with a smile in years to come. Make memories now!

Looks fine on the met office!

Even in the worst version it’s only ‘showers ‘.

Go! Different views, out and about in the day, seaside walks, I like sitting under the porch of my tent watching the rain come down, wine glass in hand...

Is swap rain for the last 3 days in a tent! Grin

NCTDN · 29/07/2019 15:27

What did you decide?

buckeejit · 01/08/2019 23:45

We were at a festival last weekend in lots of rain. But there are breaks so make the most of it & also, a little intense in tents is fun. Take board games & have snacks - it can still be memorable in a good way, especially if you embrace it a little

OP, if it's as well set as you say with bed etc I'd go ahead.

I'm posting as we have a similar position - every time I look at the weather for our camping trip the forecast gets worse! It's not terrible just yet (showers every day, tho), it could yet tip towards mostly dry. But it could also become 5 days of heavy rain. TBH, DH and I are agreed we'll book somewhere with a roof for last 2 nights if that is the case (as campsite only about £20 a night). It's a long trip for us (5 nights) the only time we did that long before it was quite rainy which I hated, but it was saved by the fact we were with loads of friends, so we could go in and out of one another's tents and the site had a few big barns for shelter. But it didn't help we can't fit much in our car, so we couldn't fit wellies, I didn't have a good raincoat etc (we came staight from a week elsewhere, so couldn't get a good forecast before we left).

This time we do have a borrowed massive roofbox, so that makes a difference in that we can pack extra clothing, wellies and the like - I'm thinking a gazebo's a good idea so we have more living space. And I might take my crappy laptop (there's a power supply for pitch) so if the kids can't run about outside in the morning, they can at least play games or watch stuff, as site apparently has good wifi.

Any other tips for a trip that may be on the moist side? Kids are 8 and 11.

We bought a £100 caravan, never looked back, it was dryish and easily heated
