How many of you are there?
What ages?
Do you want to sleep on the floor or up a bit higher?
What do you already have? A tent?
Do you want to walk onto the campsite or drive there?

Naomi9313 · 23/07/2019 22:48

How much space is in your car and what's your budget?

I quite like sleeping bags tbh.
But I don't bring special camping cutlery - just ordinary things from the kitchen.

I like bringing collapsible chairs so we can sit out with our dinner.
I have a Trangia stove that runs on meths

Cooroo · 23/07/2019 22:53

I like pillows. Also some thing between sheet and air bed makes it less sweaty.

Camping chairs. Small stove, pans, kettle. Bag for rubbish. Washing up bowl - you can get collapsible ones from outdoor shops.

Tea bags.

Naomi9313 · 23/07/2019 22:59

@Cooroo omg tea bags!! What a shout ha didn't even cross my mind!! I'll look for rest of the stuff thank you yeah we have pillows and quilts

My DF is a pro at camping - her man n necessity is a bucket with a kids seat over it for wee's in the night!
After 2 nights away in a tiny tent this weekend, is def agree!!!
Wet wipes, toilet roll, ice blocks. Empty bottles for water.

msmith501 · 23/07/2019 23:05

... a hotel room? Only joking Smile

Youwantshoesinashoeshop · 23/07/2019 23:11

Bedsbedsbedsbeds. Forget everything else. Get comfy beds. Try them at home first. Oh, and a blackout tent liner.

In rank order of bed hierarchy:

Fishing loungers with adjustsble legs: epic.

Decathlon blow up bed frames with a good sim on top.

Sim on a wide camp bed.

Sim on the floor

Airbed (but some.people love these...)
Foam mat
Hard, raw.earth :)

Oh, nd some.slip on, slip off shoes, plus a dustpan and brush.

Pegs also have a multitude of uses.

Sleeping bags are awful IMO. sheets or duvets much nicer.

Naomi9313 · 23/07/2019 23:12

@msmith501 that's was my first thought when OH suggested camping 😭😂

What sort of camping do you think you will like?

Some people like as many home comforts as possible and have EHU (Electric Hook Up) some people like a much wilder rustic style.

I am like that only go where they allow proper campfires, and don’t go to sites that have EHU.

I take a small gas stove and otherwise cook on or in the fire. So need a grill for over the fire, and a cast iron pot.

I use a high quality coolbox that will keep stuff cold for 5 days without being plugged in.

Most people prefer to take a table, for food prep and eating. Folding chairs (though these are not good for sitting at the table).

Perhaps a small table to put your stove on.

Pans and utensils for whatever you plan to cook

Brush fit getting sand / grass / crumbs out of the tent.

Washing up bowl, scourer, T towel

Easy to kick on and off shoes for going in and out of tent

Flip flops for showers

Wellies for kids: Dewey grass

Cork screw / bottle opener

Cafitiere?

Big 5l water container (supermarket bottled water one) to then re-fill for your water.

Torches, head torches, lanterns to hang in tent.

TheRedBarrows · 24/07/2019 07:19

Oh: and no bubbles / bubble wands.

Detergent on tents is a no-no: destroys the waterproofing.

SheChoseDown · 24/07/2019 08:48

Looking around the site I'm on now there are some serious campers. It's unbelievable what people think to bring. And the ways in which they get it all there! 😲

Fairy lights seem to be a necessity. And poles/sheets to make a shelter.

Naomi9313 · 24/07/2019 09:07

@SheChoseDown ahh it's unbelievable isn't it we went last weekend shitty tent two air beds a quilt and a bbq and people were next level the people beside us had a blow up settee in their porch 😂 they also made a full on bolognese and garlic breads for tea. They took it serious!!

Thank you everyone I wouldn't of though of half of that stuff myself x

That’s a tarp, SheChose.

A very flexible ‘travelling light ‘ way to create shade and shelter if you don’t have a massive tent.

FWIW DH takes it seriously but wouldn't dream of taking a air sofa. Our little luxuries are a mocha pot for coffee and an inflatable pillow!

Our kit includes:
Tent
Sleeping mat
Sleeping bag
Pillow
Cooking kit (we usually take gas and use multi purpose pots for cooking and eating)
Water (or access to water)
Torch
Mini first aid kit
Camping towels (if you have shower access)
Toothbrush and toothpaste!
Knife or multitool

Including our food and clothing (both are personal so I've not included) all this fits in two 50l backpacks so if we wanted to carry it, we could.
