Does anyones DH/DP actually enjoy camping?

Its just that of all the families I know with a tent (in RL) it tends to be the Mums that go camping with the children , leaving DH/DP at home (or, if he does go, its not without much whinging and grumbling).

Incidently we've just bought our first tent and are due for our first night camping in 2 weeks time -DP is not exactly what you would call keen

other way round in our house, dh has been naggin for years to go camping, and I have only relented this year as long as I could still have my 'proper' holiday

Troutpout · 28/07/2007 20:42

We both love it

FrayedKnot · 28/07/2007 20:50

Dh would go camping at the drop of a hat, I always think it would be fab when it's 30 deg outside but then remember how much i hated some aspects of our past holidays in caravns / eurocamp tents let alone a real tent

(torrential rain, leakages, communal showers, etc etc)

We all love camping, dp sometimes has a slight moan about setting up . We are looking forward to our first camping trip without children when we get back from Florida.

Kbear · 28/07/2007 20:52

DH is okay with it but has a four night limit. I am surprised at that really as he does like to be ironing and doesn't really like people!

Kbear · 28/07/2007 20:52

ironing? that'll be the day. Meant he does like to be ironed. As in not creased and living out of a bag!

FrayedKnot · 28/07/2007 20:53

PS I am a wimp

I think campers are brave and have jolly good fun and I wish I could relax and have that kind oif fun too

Lucycat · 28/07/2007 20:55

we both love it too

Cornwall here we come!

BettySpaghetti · 28/07/2007 20:57

lol at kbears DH -I had visions of an ironing recluse!

Sounds like it must just be amongst the people I know that the men are not so keen then. A few of the women have said they meet with other Mums and children for a weekends camping sans men so I wondered if it was the norm

I'm the camping fan in this family. Dp doesn't mind it occasionally. But we're so far both fairly pleased to not be doing any this year.

I worked out recently that I've probably slept under canvas for almost a year of my life

FeelingOld · 28/07/2007 21:29

MY dh likes it once we get set up and he can relax. I enjoy putting the tent up etc but dh briefs us everytime as to who does what and in what order and if we do not comply he is not happy .

Once we are sitting outside the tent, alcohol in hand and the kids are playing he loves it (that is until its time to pack up again .

marymoocow · 28/07/2007 21:33

It has taken until this year to convice dh that camping would be fun. Since he decided to take the plunge he has become completely addicted, so much so that he is constantly looking for new sites for next year.
We've just got back from a soggy week in dorset and he is still is as keen (as we all are - except ds2 age 4 who wanted to come home on Tuesday )

Sixer · 28/07/2007 21:39

Dp is dreading it. Only because DC wake at 5.30. Sine breaking up on Wednesday I have had them in training. They have been going to bed a 9pm and guess what, 3 days later still waking at 5.30. Shit. Will stick with it though, we have 3 weeks before we go on our first tent holiday. Hopefully the cycle will be broken by then and DP will get his much deserved lie in. >

Dh would prefer a hotel somewhere hot I know, but like me he is filled with horror at the thought of spending hours at an airport and then on a plane with an autistic child, so camping it is! (plus we can't afford hotels in England). I think he is coming round though, now that we have got a decent non-draughty tent that we can stand up in and I was surprised the other day when he was talking to our neighbour who is off to Egypt. Dh said "Oh it's camping for us but I expect we'll have more fun than you". He was laughing (and probably trying to wind-up our neighbour) but it was still nice to hear.
I have taken the kids camping with other mothers and children at the weekend but that is because dh was working, not because he wouldn't want to come.

PrettyCandles · 29/07/2007 07:16

Definitely the other way around! Dh and the LOs love it, whereas I "do it for the children".

And not even that: I'm currently holidaying with 9mo non-sleeping (and incidentally quite poorly) ds2 at my parents, while dh has taken ds1 and dd camping in sunnier climes. Well, you can hardly take a non-sleeping, 5am-waking, yelling and burbling baby to a campsite with a strict 'no noise at night' policy.

Millarkie · 29/07/2007 07:57

Dh and kids love it more than me I think...although I love the days, just can't sleep at night...getting a thermorest for next trip though.

womba1 · 29/07/2007 08:09

I have a DH who would quite happily camp all year round if it was possible.
However, we aren't talking posh tents here or caravans... no..no...no....
we're talking medieval re-enactment! Sleeping under sheepskins (sleeping bags not authentic enough!), in a huge striped medieval tent, with a tiny campfire outside!
Nothing modern day is allowed... he loves it!!

TranquilaManana · 29/07/2007 08:20

dp is a big girls blouse about camping.

we were going to glasto 2 years ago, just dp and i. planned to camp. at 11th hour he went and bought a campervan rather than face tenting it
was nice to have a loo and shower tho, gotta admit.

i love camping. in hot places, mostly tho.

puppydavies · 29/07/2007 09:07

all camping fans here. i think it helps that we do a lot of our camping at festivals, so there are plenty of unhealthy distractions to outweigh the healthy outdoors thing that might otherwise put dp off

tibsy · 29/07/2007 09:19

we're all campers in the tibsy house too, hi de hi!!!!
taking dd for the first time this year, she's 11 months.... a bit apprehensive, but cant wait to get out there in the big outdoors
