Family friendly camping recommendations in France

Can anyone recommend where to camp in France. Ideally near a beach with a pool, plenty of toilets or do people buy those camping loos?
Are the tents rammed in together or do you usually have your own pre booked spot? There would be 2 or 3 families with children of all ages so we'd like a spot next to one another.

Where about a, how far do you want to drive?!

MissyBB · 30/06/2019 21:32

Hi, we're in Surrey. We love warm weather and have a superb polycotton tent but to be fair travelling with a toddler is never fun so maybe after the ferry no more than 3 hours?

Campsites in France have clearly marked pitches, often separated by hedges or bushes.
There will be proper toilet blocks with plenty of showers and often individual washbasins in cubicles as well. Most sites will have a pool and some "animation" or entertainment for children.
Some have a shop, restaurant or bar.
If you are in a tent and don't want to have to trot to the loos for a night time wee, a portapottie type can be useful.
Have a look at this site in Brittany (we have stayed here lots of tones, it's great for families with dc)

Right by the beach and a short walk to a pretty harbour town.

Brittany has lots of lovely sites, we went to one called La Trinite near Carnac... it was about 2.5 hours from Roscoff port.
It was a lovely site, perfect for toddlers, each pitch was in its own little spot with hedges surrounding, plenty of clean toilets and showers..
It was next to the beach- we could hear the waves from our tent. Little pool and 3 slides.

La Baie was the sister site across the road- also lovely..

Now we travel a little further to the Vendee region- some lovely sites there too. We've been going to La Garangeiore for the past 3 years.

Check out the Eurocamp and canvas holidays brochures for sites where they have their own tents...usually can be relied upon to have great toilet/shower facilities with pools/bars/shops etc...

Domaine du Logis not far from saint malo, we went recently with our toddler Smile

Thank you all for your replies we will take a deeper look later today.
We are also travelling with 8, 9 and 10 year olds, do you have any recommendations for sites they might enjoy, maybe pools with water slides?
How many hours driving and from which French ferry port to reach the la Trinité site?
Is the weather much different from the UK?

Thanks again x

If you want decent weather that is guaranteed (as far as it can be) you need to go way south. We have a mobile home 8 hours south of Calais and the weather can be truly shit in the summer,

DefConOne · 01/07/2019 16:00

If you want water slides Les Mouettes in Brittany is excellent. We went Plymouth-Roscoff and it's really close to the ferry port. Not sure which port you are planning in sailing from. Weather is a bit better than UK but you will need to drive fora few hours further South for much better weather.

We love Dol de Bretagne. It's not right on the coast, but has wonderful open air and indoor pools, slides, lazy river, boating lake, playgrounds, cycling and horse riding - both led pony rides and a proper stables for lessons and treks, lots of other activities including archery, zip wire and climbing wall for older children, pizzeria, bar and near to a small town with a lovely food market, lots of restaurants and good supermarkets. Day trips to Mont St Michel etc.

Awning10 · 01/07/2019 20:33

Too many to choose from. Have a look at www.ukcampsite.co.uk/. If you don't want to drive too far then Chateau des Marais in the Loire is good. Would also recommend Chateau Drancourt is only an hour from Calais (so good weather not guaranteed). We started going to France over 10 years ago when the kids were toddlers and we haven't looked back. Stop-overs are easy and cheap... either pitch for the night or book a cheap motel.

Not near the beach but we went to Sunelia La Ribeyre and are returning this summer. It's great. Pool and lake. Kayaks and paddle boards. I was recommended it on here and we love it 😊

Millimat · 07/07/2019 08:30

Aww @hillbilly that's still my favourite site ever! I really want to go back, but am worried that it may not be as perfect and ruin any memories!

Sorry millimat I thought you were talking about Les Valades! Yes isn't La Ribeyre fantastic? When were you last there?

Millimat · 07/07/2019 09:10

Well hillybilly they're my two favourite ones Grin
I think it was me that recommended la ribeyre. It was 2012 when we went and from there we decided that camp sites with lakes were the way forward! It's funny that la ribeyre and les valades are so different yet still my top 2!

hillbilly · 07/07/2019 19:26

Millimat def since kids are older La Ribeyre suits us better. Especially since the lifeguard at the lake endured they are wearing life jackets for paddle boards so we don't have to micro manage them so much 😀

Geometric · 07/07/2019 19:52

We’re off to Ribeyre this summer after seeing your recommendations too, Millimat!

Sunshinegirlgogogo · 18/07/2019 23:00

You might like to look on the site of Les Castels campsites......really superior locations, very clean, loads of extras and in gorgeous areas. Last year, we visited La forge de Ste Marie in Haute Marne and also L”Orangerie de Beauregard in the Loire area.....this last one is run by an English couple.....Would definitely recommend!

NoKnit · 19/07/2019 08:37

We are currently in the South, near St Tropez and looking for a new campsite for next week as our oldest (6) is a bit upset he hasn't made any friends on holiday as there are mainly French families here and he can't play with the other children. Can anyone recommend a campsite around here that has a bit more of an international (not necessarily British as we are actually a bilingual English/German family) feel to it? I don't think he cares about kids club that much and since smhis brother is only 3 he is probably too young but wants to meet other kids to kick a football around with etc. We don't mind a drive but want to stay at the Mediterranean since we drove all this way. Would also consider Italy etc

NCTDN · 19/07/2019 10:53

Can't help @NoKnit but hope you find somewhere.
