Comfiest possible sleeping solution when camping

Due to go camping next month, only thing we have left to get is air beds / mats / camp beds.

I have a ongoing hip problem (I sound ancient saying that but am actually in my 30s!). I need ideas for how to make sleeping as comfortable as possible as I am an absolute misery without sleep!!!!

Air mattress the deep proper bed ones and a foam topper. Then a proper pillow too. And don't let DH on it with you

@SeaToSki Is it better to go for 2 singles rather than a double then?

Def a bed of your own, a nice mattress topper and a duvet. Flannelette bottom sheet as well for extra cosiness. We have an aerobed and it is fantastic

Whether you go mat or camp bed make sure you have plenty of insulating layers underneath you, I found our new camp beds very cold and uncomfortable.

I have a sore shoulder at the moment and can’t get comfy in bed. I am seriously considering taking one of our recliner/zero gravity chairs upstairs to sleep in, disclaimer I haven’t actually tried it but it is such a supportive position to lie in.

I agree with Sea - own single airbed, otherwise when your OH turns/settles, you'll get bounced! We have 2 singles with a king size fitted sheet holding them side-by-side. We also have foam mats (like these) under the airbeds to keep the cold from the ground out. These are also useful if you find you're lying at a slope/angle you can put extra mats at one side of the air bed to level it. I find that is what makes me sore- sleeping at a slight incline, leaves me aching

There is a Coleman double air mattress that has two separate air compartments so that you don’t get tipped towards a heavier partner or feel every wobble.

Personally I like a SIM on the ground. A blow up bed or a camp bed both bend under the heaviest part of your body no matter how soft the topping. I like the rigid ground, with a soft topping that gives way where I put pressure.

But other people like foam on top of a camp bed or blow up bed. It is a matter of what suits you best.

I'd second the air mattress which has two singles that can be zipped together to make a double. You feel much less movement from your bed fellow in the night! Ours was sold under the "Campingaz" brand but it also says Coleman inside the box. We got it from Amazon.
An extra layer on the ground under the mattress also helps to keep the cold out - we have a tent carpet, but you could just use a large picnic rug or blanket.

Another self-inflating mat lover here. I've never got on with airbeds. They sag, can be chilly and often get punctures.
You can get quite thick double self inflating mats (just for you - not to share!) so if you think the thickness would be enough for your hip pain, it's worth considering.
Alpkit and Mountain Equipment ones are both pretty decent.

Campbeds are very comfortable and also warmer, because you are not on the ground.
You can use a duvet if you prefer them.
I used to have backpain, when sleeping in a tent, but these higher beds were marvellous.
I have now invested in a small vintage caravan, much easier on the old hips and back;-))

I now have a 10cm SIM after several camping trips with an air bed. I get a great night's sleep now - I hated that 'bouncing' whenever I turned over.

We put the plastic backed picnic blankets underneath for insulation and I have a 'Beast' sleeping pod so I can turn over without getting tangled up in the sleeping bag.

Ohyesiam · 16/06/2019 23:15

I am happy with air mattress with yoga mat underneath, or the cold from the ground comes up. Then topper, and massive feather duvet and pillows.

Onlymeyousee · 16/06/2019 23:20

Any have experience of duvalay?

SunnySummerDays · 16/06/2019 23:23

Camp bed with pod sleeping bag! Wear a Long sleeved thermal top too.

Karwomannghia · 16/06/2019 23:25

If you have electric hook up take an electric blanket!

Stompythedinosaur · 30/06/2019 09:48

Futon with pillow and duvet is the comfiest option for me.

Luaa · 03/07/2019 23:16

I have a cheap camp bed, which I used to wake up every half an hour with hip pain when I slept in. I now have a sim on top of that and then a sheet as I found the sim made me sweaty otherwise. I sleep great now! Its not a thick or expensive sim either, think it was about £40, but it's made such a difference!

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 04/07/2019 20:25

We had expensive 10 cm SIMs which we didn’t get on with at all. I like to sleep on my side in the foetal position and always found my lower back unsupported on a single. My DH felt the same. We then got two Coleman inflatable double mattresses with the separate chambers and have found them so much more comfortable.. Also, they pack do much smaller than the SIMS, which are really bulky.

LoobyLou2709 · 04/07/2019 22:06

We have a Vango 10cm Double SIM, fleece fitted sheet and then a 15tog feather duvet! It's more comfy than my bed at home! Smile We didn't get on with air beds at all, but I did get the cheaper ones, we found them so cold and constantly going down, and every time one of us moved it would wake the other up!
