Best toilet ideas..

Hi. I've been lurking for a while reading lots of posts. I've not been camping for years but we (my DH and I) have bought a tent and have a list of things we need. My question is what do people do about going to the toilet? I have stomach issues generally and I worry that this will be the thing that puts me off. I have just been looking at camping toilets, toilet stools (excuse the pun!) and also degradable bags. If I am overly worried about toilet issues when I am not camping I dose up on Imodium just to be safe but I know this isn't ideal. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

To be honest we only ever use our camping toilet for wees. It is just a basic porta potty type with chemicals in. If you need a toilet for number 2s I would just pitch my tent reasonably close to the toilet block.

Barkette · 21/04/2019 22:07

Thanks. I think DH knows we would need to be by a toilet block so maybe I am worrying for no reason. Do you just use a bucket for wees? Or need something more substantial?

Close to the toilet block, with some sort of nightlight in your tent (we use glowsticks) and a head torch plus crocs close tobtge tent door for quick trips. I can't really imagine using anything in the tent, no privacy, uneven ground to balance on, no handwash. I have heard of adults weeing into a disposable nappy at night though.

Barkette · 21/04/2019 22:14

I appreciate the feedback. I am possibly overthinking it. We have garden crocs and some headlights too. so I could just make sure I am able to make it to the toilet block. I could use the nappy idea as a back up just in case. I don't want this to be the thing that's ruins it for us both as DH is so excited about us getting out there and camping. Just need to make sure our two spaniels behave too!

You can get buckets with lids, I've seen many a parent of young children trudge off to the toilets to empty them in the morning. Hold on a mo I'll see if I can find a link.

Here's a selection for youGrin

Never used any kind of camping toilet or bucket, even when I was pregnant or our kids were tiny. We just use the campsite loos.

RainbowFox · 21/04/2019 22:39

I've been considering these options too as before I had DS I was a solo camper so just went to the toilet block. But now if I camp just me and DS, I can't leave him in on his own in the tent if I need to go in the night (which I seem to always need to do when I'm camping, even more so if it's raining!)

You can get proper caravan toilets with lids that use chemicals. I would probably have something like this if I thought it was going to be used for 💩

Otherwise you can get buckets with a toilet seat on and I've seen you can add a nappy in like others have suggested - video here

What kind of tent have you got? That might make a difference depending on space.

donajimena · 21/04/2019 22:43

I've been considering a porta potti. I worry about letting rip though.

Barkette · 21/04/2019 22:47

oh great thanks for the advice. I will have a look at those. I think it can be more psychological with me as if I think I can't go I seem to want it need to go more! We have a Wynnster Bordeaux 6 which will have us all (I mean my DH and the two dogs) sleeping in one part and leave the other side free I suppose. The middle part will have bits and bobs in. DH is very good with my toilet issues but I don't think we have ever been that enclosed before! I'm so excited to be able to escape my comfort zone and embrace the outdoors but know I maybe need to be a bit wary at the same time. This weekend would have been a good chance to embrace the outdoors!

This would be good if you need to do more than a wee: m.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-portable-flush-toilet-p466831&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5tXhnJPi4QIVC-J3Ch1xLgigEAQYASABEgK6UvD_BwE&gclsrc=

Or look up ‘Kampa Khazie’.

Or the kind that are a bucket with seat. Some people use cat litter. Some tents have a side porch with door suitable for a toilet compartment.

We normally camp in woods or in massive fields so I just wee behind the tent, or else in a bucket in the tent.

I wouldn’t want to camp next to the toilet block with the lights going on and off, door slamming and people chatting to their children on the way past all night long.

ExpletiveDelighted · 21/04/2019 22:49

Also I avoid alcohol apart from maybe a single glass of wine and evening drinks with caffeine in when camping, much less likely to need to go in the night then.

Barkette · 21/04/2019 22:54

I hadn't thought about the extra noise being by the toilets. The dogs settle really well usually but I bet that would make them bark. I usually only need a wee during the night so I may be ok with a bucket and lid and a good disinfect in the morning (with bags and stuff just in case) Just need to stick to foods that don't affect me and won't make me go often. Suppose the camping staple of beans are off then..hehe maybe I need a new post for tummy friendly camping foods!!

You can also line a bucket with a bin liner and put some cat litter in it and use that for emergency wees then just tie it up and dispose of it. Many campsites specify that you are not to empty your "night time wee buckets" (obv not with cat litter Hmm) down their toilets, you have to use the chemical disposal points instead.

Logoplanter · 22/04/2019 07:17

I got a Kampa Khazi for us for the reasons Rainbow specified - 2 young kids and just me with them so couldn't leave them for late night/early morning wees and couldn't send them on their own. We used a bag with cat litter in and it worked out really well. I took two bags (we went for two nights) and just changed it each morning, and the was no smell. It was only used for wees though. Only issue was it was in the main living space but we didn't have anything else in there and were outside all the time so worked out ok. It is pretty big though - took up the front passenger seat of the car!

PicaK · 22/04/2019 20:27

Well my husband thought I lost the plot last year when I bought the Aldi camping toilet. One trip and he was a total convert. It didn't smell at all - which is what I was most concerned about - we said only wees but the kids didn't listen!!
You need to buy fluid and the special blue liquid too. Honestly best money we spent.
They are £40 and still in stock.

RainbowFox · 22/04/2019 21:32

The Kampa Khazi looks great!!

funmummy48 · 22/04/2019 21:38

We use a luggable loo lined with a strong bin liner & with a couple of handfuls of cat litter in the bottom. It's for night time were only and sits in our porch at night with loo roll on top & a bottle of hand sanitizer. Works a treat!

RomaineCalm · 23/04/2019 00:31

We take some 'travel johns' with us.

Normally I make the trip to the toilet block in the night (with flip flops next to the door, along with a fleece and a torch) but sometimes it's helpful to have an emergency option. For the boys they are pretty easy but I only use it over a towel just in case of leaks.

Funf · 23/04/2019 07:32

Top toilet tips
I would take one as I hate the walk of shame through the night, but if you do , head touch and leave a small light outside your tent so you can find it on the way back a glow stick is ideal.
Buckets with out a lid and chemical can smell, a proper chemical toilet is worth it, I once had the trots and was very glad of ours, plus its easier for the kids.
This sort is about £50 but no smells and easy to remove No 2s

Aldi have the chemicals cheap at the moment

Funf · 23/04/2019 07:33

During the night leave a bowl of soap and water next to it for hand washing

Barkette · 23/04/2019 09:04

Thanks for all of the advice it is appreciated. I think I will invest in something with a lid so I have peace of mind in case of emergency Smile
