Lovely little campsite by the sea in Cornwall, any suggestions?

I think I'm getting stuck in my ways cos I used to live there and I always go back to the same places. We're taking DS who's 10 months there next week and I fancy a change! The one I was thinking of at Polzeath charges £30 a night which I think is a bit cheeky!

Can anyone suggest something lovely and idyllic preferably on the North coast (although I could be persuaded south!) I'm thinking on a cliff top above a lovely bay so we can spend lots of time on the beach and in the sea in the beautiful weather which I'm sure is on its way!

I stayed at one on the clifftops very near St Agnes on the North Coast. Sorry dont remember name, but it was a 15 minute walk to St Agnes, very near an old tin mine. Maybe a google would find it.

It was very minimal in terms of facilities though but the views were incredible, i think I saw the best sunset I have ever seen in my life there.

bohemianbint · 04/07/2007 14:56

Oooh, I might have stayed there once, there was literally no one there at all!

Hardly anyone when i was there too!

I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea being up there.

Wisteria · 04/07/2007 15:20

I used to live in North C - when I went back to visit with the camper I found a fab little one which seems to match your requirements.
Can't remember the name of it but will try to find out.
If you take the coast road towards Crackington Haven there's a dirt track off to your right to a faarm with a camping sign.
Very quiet, only facilities were toilet and 2 showers in a field but that suited me and the girls. You walk down the road towards the bay where there's a decentish pub and couple of cafes, it's a great beach for dcs (I learnt to swim there) with a cliff walk, sand, rock pools etc. Just around the corner from Widemouth Bay and Bude etc and away from commerciality.

Wisteria - Do you mean Penhalt Farm? If so that's where I always used to go, I even lived there for a bit in a camper van! I'm pretty much thinking that we'll end up back there (cos it is brilliant), but I sometimes wonder if I ought to try somewhere else!

probably already met you then - my Camper van was green and white with a retro 'pacer' effect push up top!

bohemianbint · 04/07/2007 16:13

blimey, small world! I first went there in 1994, been back on and off ever since. Used to have a 1971 purple VW camperand was all over north Devon and Cornwall until 2000. I bet we know loads of the same people!

lol I love coincidences

and am very that you both have campers

policywonk · 04/07/2007 16:42

Guardian camping guide recommends Dennis Cove nr Padstow (I know, I know).

Wisteria · 04/07/2007 17:04

aDad - don't be - I had to sell mine when I split up very (couldn't afford the £40 a week it cost me to do under 100 miles), was ok before, because I had a car for work and camper for fun they're much better on long journeys!
I really miss it - especially now, cos I could afford it again, wish i could track it down - was 1972 EVF 172K.
I was there at the same times as you but with camper from 1997 until about 2002 (born in Cornwall but now live in the Mids ). My Dad lives just outside Okehampton and we're quite often down there too.

spudmasher · 04/07/2007 17:07

Dennis cove is the camp site in the milk advert for tescos with Martin Clunes and wotshername from thingymybob.

I like Mother Ivey's bay. It has it's ow beach. Fern and Phil have a caravan there.North Cornwall near Padstow.

Wisteria · 04/07/2007 17:10

You're all making me jealous now - I want to come home to Cornwall!

spudmasher · 04/07/2007 17:16

I grew up there too Wisteria!
Where are you from in Cornwall?

Wisteria · 04/07/2007 17:21

Lewannick - little village just outside Launceston

NeverEndingPileOfLaundry · 04/07/2007 17:25

There is a campsite at Porthjoke or Pollyjoke (the same place but it has 2 spellings) on the north coast. It is in a valley just above a secluded bay. It looks lovely, though I have never stayed there, as was being ripped off for £30 a night at Polzeath......

Wisteria · 04/07/2007 17:51

www.north-cornwall-accommodation.com/campsites.html

This looks quite a good site for having a browse on bohemianbint, btw your camper wasn't purple in one light then black in another was it? 'cos I met a really nice girl who had one like that in Tavistock once!

bohemianbint · 04/07/2007 18:56

Checking out all those links as we speak...Cheers!

Wisteria, no, my camper van was just one colour purple. I sold mine too in 2000 to buy a 2 round the world tickets (one for ex-boyf who I dumped and he never paid me back!) and I'd love to get another one! I think they were the happiest days of my life, when I was living in the van, mooching about, no responsibilities...sigh..!

Weirder still, I used to work in Bridgerule with a couple from Lewannick...

I'm currently looking into Treyarnon Bay, how awesome does the beach look?!

Wisteria · 05/07/2007 09:40

B@5t@rd!! - Hope you had a great time though.

Yeah - had I not been with a certain bloke I probably would have kept mine tbh and coped with finances but he was very domineering and tried to curb my hippiness (hah!).

Beach looks wonderful, have you been to Trebarwith Strand, cos that's lovely too?

What were they called? if they were an old Lewannick family they would have known us (my dad knew everyone and I think my Mum was referred to as 'Saint' Jane).

bohemianbint · 05/07/2007 12:30

I looooooooove Trebarwith, reckon the nearest campsite to there is Tintagel but it's always really windy up there at night!

Your ex-fella sounds about as good as mine. Ah well, at least they're ancient history now! I can't remember the surname of the family (or the bloke's first name!) but his wife was called Dot and they had a daughter called Dawn. Sound familiar?

Where are you living these days? I'm desperate to move back down there, just need to sort out how to make a living there!

OP posts:
Wisteria · 05/07/2007 12:37

I know, I want to go back but can't contemplate a move until my girls from first marriage have left home as I wouldn't take them away from their Dad.
That's the biggest problem with living in that area, very few jobs to be had. There are more and more call centre thingies opening up but I can't think I'd enjoy that, we currently live near Nottingham and Derby, the only saving grace in that is that we're close to the Derbyshire Dales, which is very picturesque.
If I was single and free from responsibility I would go back anyway and work in a shop or maybe at the Eden project or something. I always found you can live on a lot less down there.

Wisteria · 05/07/2007 12:38

I may have known a Dawn, will ask my Dad and get back to you!

Wisteria · 06/07/2007 12:34

OMG!!

Apparently our next door neighbour was called Dawn............ probably not the same one but a coincidence all the same!

bohemianbint · 06/07/2007 18:30

Blimey, you never know, Lewannick's not huge! How mad! I'm really looking forward to getting back down there, having a nice scenic detour via Glastonbury and Avebury on the way back as well, can't wait!

OP posts:
Scree · 06/07/2007 22:32

We've just got back from here and it's really nicve. Was in that cool camping book. Toilets and showers were amazing, and the view over to a couple of St Ives beaches, is just wonderful.

Wisteria · 09/07/2007 11:35

I think that's really expensive! Although probably lovely as you say, I'd rather spend less on site and more on wine!
