If anyone is going camping/caravaning, and in need of gas bottles, try your local household waste dump thingy place. We took stuff to the dump last night and saw a whole load of the gas bottles just sitting there. So we asked the dump bloke if we could have one, and he said help yourself!!!!

Hope this helps, and obviously, not sure every 'dump bloke' will be as nice or as obliging as our lovely 'dump bloke' LOL.

That's where we got ours from (suggested by a very nice man in a camping shop in Towyn) We got ours for £3 from the Dump in Rhyl. Bit battered but it didn't matter as when you get it refilled they swap your bottle for a full one anyway.

Peachy · 12/06/2007 10:33

We've never used the stove actually have Rather A Big Collection now!

Had planned to take it to the forest of dean Thursday (inset ay friday- no MN skiver bashing please ) but DH instead wants to buy as ible burner

Keep telloing him, if he doesnt stop he'll have to keep thsi house rented when we buy one, just to store the stuff in! he's even after a Vango Breckenrifge (FAB tennt) now, as wella s our Ontario

Wolfgirl · 12/06/2007 10:36

Tents!! funny things tents. We have a Colarado 8, but it just aint big enough. Also we are 6 footers and can barely stand up, so if anyone can suggest one that is really high and has loads of room, we would be very grateful with much kissing of feet! xx

The Outwell Vermont L is fab

Peachy · 12/06/2007 10:44

Our Ontario (Khyam 8) is incredibly bifg (and excellent value)- and very high indeed, over 2 metres

Have a look at the new Vango too- brand new model but exceptionally nice imo.

Wolfgirl · 12/06/2007 10:48

tbh I doubt we will do anything this year, finances dont yer know, a bit tight. bUt will def consider a new one for next year. Will look at your suggestions ladies, no doubt buy second hand too. xx

Wolfgirl - I presume you mean the Vango Colorado?

Coleman tents tend to be taller than most - we went in a Galileo XL and a Cedar Creek at the weekend and they quite roomy.

Wolfgirl · 12/06/2007 14:14

I think its an Outwell, that seems to ring a bell.

If you leave it until next year keep an eye for me on Ebay LOL as Dh never manages to outlast a season with a tent LOL

Anteater · 12/06/2007 16:38

So heres the thing Wolfgirl,
if you take your bottle back to a registered dealer (either Calor or Camping Gaz) you will get between £20 and £25 back for the empty bottle..
(I do it in reverse, collect the empty bottles, refill and sell on)

Wolfgirl · 12/06/2007 16:54

peachy - hokey doke LOL

Anteater - not sure I know what you mean, as we are new to camping, and borrowed a gas bottle last year; I dont know about deposits, something I guess I will learn about very soon. But am trying to use intelligence and work out what you mean.... so, the bottles/cannisters we got from dump have a name on them.... would that be the name of the company that originally supplied them? If so, we take them to that company and they give us some dosh?

If so, another visit to the dump is in order me thinks! LOL xx

btw all, does the price to fill a bottle vary from different gas suppliers, or are they roughly the same (you know, like a garage for your petrol). I think my local supplier quoted me £17.99 to fill a 4kg bottle...would that be right?

OP posts:
Anteater · 12/06/2007 17:31

Yes thats it, Wolfgirl, but you do not need to take them back to the manufacturer, just a dealership.
Prices vary from place to place depending on how 'captive' the customer is!

Morning, am going to attempt to take a large bottle to a dealer of gas this evening. will let you know how it goes. DH says they will only swap for another bottle, but wont give me gas for free too. But the bottle I have is 15kg, and I only want 4kg, so thought it would be fair if they gave me a bit of gas....at least. Mmmmm.... we shall see. Be grateful for anything tbh LOL

OP posts:
Anteater · 13/06/2007 09:37

Steady Wolfy, unfortunatley the smaller bottles are the ones that are in demand, namely
Calor
4.5 3.9 7 6 KG
Camping Gaz
904 907

Dealerships probably will not be interested in a 15Kg, too common.

They are obliged to give you a deposit back, I think you may have to produce proof of purchase, but anyway you shoud get at least £10 for any of the above bottles, worth twice that to the dealer
Good Luck

Wolfgirl · 13/06/2007 09:51

Yep youre right, just called our local dealership and he said the 4.5kg are most in demand;

The big one we got from the tip 12-15kg are not in demand and the most he could do would be to take it off our hands ready for recycling - DOH! or we could take it back to the Supplier and see what they say, but he thinks we would not get a deposit back for it. (and it would mean our petrol trying to get to the supplier for little return) - you have to really know your stuff - dont ya! grief man!

We also have (already ours) a 2.75kg bottle. This one is a specialised size, and will cost more to fill than the 4.5kg

We also got from the tip a 9kg, which would cost up £14.50 to replace/fill.

So for us, it looks like it will pay us better to get the 9kg filled, dispose of the larger one, and just leave the 2.75kg in the shed.

So people, if you do go to the tip, here is another tip. Dont pick up the really big ones unless you really really need them.

HTH
xx

wolfgirl, I am 6' tall too and the tent we have is the Vango Vista 800 which has loads of head room in the middle living area. I think it must have been discontinued as it no longer appears on the Vango website, hence bargain price at wildday! The newer versions are much lower - 195cm max - this is 210.

It's a great design, with 2 2-man compartments and 1 4-man; you can leave one of the 2-man compartments out if you don't need it and use the space for storage.

Poles are all colour-coded and as it's a tunnel design it's straightforward to put up.

WendyWeber · 13/06/2007 10:08

Oooh, I misremembered, it's better than that - 225 cm tall in the middle of the living area and 200cm at the edges!!!

Wolfgirl · 13/06/2007 13:39

Thanks WW. bit pricey for us, would def have to look out for a second hand one, if we did decide to get another next year.
