Camping in Luxembourg and Belgium - Millimat?

Been back less than a day and need to cheer myself up by starting to muse over next year.

A possible plan is to look around Luxembourg/Belgium, possibly adding in some of Germany and France that would be near to there or possible stop overs on the journey.

Any advice or gems of places to visit/campsites? How different are campsites to France? (As in, are showers generally free etc).

We are flexible with types of campsites, but our favourite ones have tended to have @100 pitches or less, geared towards tent campers as well as caravans, not so many mobile homes, and that are popular with the host country or have a mixture of nationalities.

Millimat, a brief search suggested that you have been to Luxembourg, hence me adding you into the title Smile

Hi Prof - sorry to hijack and go off topic but wanted to know if you enjoyed La Ribeyre.

profpoopsnagle · 28/08/2018 20:19

Yes we did thanks! We found it quite a big site (especially since the site we stayed at for a few days before had about 50 pitches) but I was really impressed with how quiet it was during the night, and that the facilities were never crowded. We also always got a sunlounger at the pool. Had a few pizzas at the restaurant, but felt the food was slightly better in the other 2 French campsites we visited (they offered more regional fare, as well as fast food).

We especially enjoyed the area, felt that there was so much to do and that it was a mixture- walking, sightseeing etc. We did the Puy du Dome railway, Besse, chateau Murol, a walk around Lac Chambon, a few drives around the mountain passes and to other villages/towns. The only place we wouldn't return to would be the caves in St Nectaire, they were interesting but rather expensive for the tour.

We would love to return to the area, although I would consider a campsite in a slightly different area now I have got my bearings but would be happy to return to Ribeyre. We did think it was slightly more expensive (food shopping wise) than some other areas of France but I guess that's because it's a tourist area.

Are you planning to return?

We did a trip this year to Strasbourg and Freiburg, driving through Luxembourg on way out and back. We stayed on the municipal site in Metz which is a tiny site on the Moselle, then Indigo Camping Strasbourg (walkable into the city- it’s worth a visit) and at Camping Hirzberg - walkable to Freiburg. Colmar is also nearby and worth a visit, again with Indigo Camping.
On way home we stayed here at Jonquilles and had a lakeside pitch- definitely going back there!
I haven’t stayed here, but this is on our list for a central Luxembourg stop Bon Accueil

Prof yes we loved it and have to admit we are quite lazy campers so enjoyed hanging out on the site a lot. Our kids are 13 and 10 and we were happy for them to take themselves off independently to pool or lake ( especially given they had to wear life jackets on the lake). We went to a few local villages and markets and took the cable car up Mont Dore and then walked to the summit. We would definitely return and our pitch under the trees could not be bettered. I think the restaurant could have been a bit more adventurous and rotisserie chicken would be a bonus.

The recommendation for La Ribeyre came from Millimat and given that she loved Les Valades I guessed I would love this site. And I was right. Long live MN 😀

Wiltz. Lovely town, great campsite. Brilliant holidays.

Yes hillbilly, I could see the similarities between LV and ribeyre, and ideal for older children. I also felt the Auvergne is a bit off the beaten track for Brit visitors and we did not get to do everything. I'd like to return without the kids and do a walking tour!

Thanks Milliways for the suggestions, going to look at them now. Strasbourg was on my list of possible French places. It looks like Luxembourg is quite small WRT travelling around to places, do you think we could get away with just 1 campsite or would it be better to consider a couple of areas?

Will also look at Wiltz!

Yay I'm so happy that la ribeyre lived up to expectations! Phew! I'm v jealous though - need to go back.
Like milliways we stopped over at municipal site in metz.
We stayed in mersch www.campingkrounebierg.lu/
which was quite a small site. I loved the look of here www.irisparc.co.uk/camping-birkelt/ which we went past but it's a far cry from les valades. Larochette where it is situated is beautiful.
You won't find many British at all at either of those sites.
