Camping in the rain

We are due to camp with our dds this weekend for the first time and it's due to rain most of the time. Any tips for calpingin the rain with children (3 & 8) please?

Waterproofs and wellies, took our grandchildren a couple of years ago when it rained, they had a great time just playing in the rain with the other children on the campsite

Keep them in the car while you pitch the tent.

Shoes in porch or entrance in plastic box. Sandals/ crocs or welllies depending on temperature.

Shorts best if warm enough - easier to dry off. Waterproofs if cold.

Always sounds worse in the tent than it really is, so wait for gentle pitter patter before the midnight loo dash.

Embrace the weather. You’ll all dry off and places will be quieter! Don’t spend all day trying to occupy small children inside a tent. Where are you going?

As long as you are warm and dry it'll be fine. Make sure you have plenty of changes of appropriate clothing and waterproof coats and shoes.

Oh, bad luck!

Shorts and wellies, to stop bottoms of trousers getting wet on toilet trips.
Take bucket / kampa kahzi / portable potty to avoid wet toilet trips.

Big plastic crate or tub inside tent door or porch for wet shoes, another for macs: maintain a dry zone beyond a certain point. Lay down a big old towel as a doormat.

If your tent hasn’t got a big porch consider quickly buying a tarp to store stuff under / cook under.

I would eat out at least one evening.

Lots of games, have a rainy day karaoke in your tent (raining dings), go to local swimming pool or cinema if it all gets too much.

Personally I love sitting dry under the tarp watching the rain. Reading, drinking wine, playing games.

Hideous doing a wet pack up though. Sit the kids in the car while you do that.

Thanks. I'm hoping for some bits of dry weather, but trying to just see it as adding to the adventure 🙄

We are going to north Devon. The campsite has a pub so we can go and sit in there for a bit if we want.

Give the site a call to check the state of the pitches after rain as we got caught out on our last trip at Easter. Ended us pitching on a mud bath even though they told us it was fine.

parrotonmyshoulder · 16/08/2018 19:22

Campsite with a pub?! Which one?

PotteringAlong · 16/08/2018 19:23

Take a lot more socks than you think you will need Grin

A good tip I saw was to take an Ikea bag to step into/take off welly boots/wet shoes so that the water all stays in one place in the tent.

Agree with PP that shorts are better as legs are easier to dry.

Thanks all. That's been really useful. The forecast has improved a bit so I'm staying optimistic!

All in one waterproofs and wellies.

Fleeces and clothes that dry easily.

And plenty of coins for the tumble dryer 😂

Seriously though embrace the "there's no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing"

Go to the beach, build sandcastles, go for walks, play outside etc.

Take their indoor toys as well and enjoy hot chocolate wrapped up in sleeping bags. Reading stories etc.

We have just come back from a three day camping trip with an 8 and 10 year old and a lot of rain. The worst bit was putting the tent up in the driving rain, DH and I were soaked through and the inside of the tent got really wet as well. So my advice is: use the car as an emergency shelter if necessary, take lots of towels and spare clothes and PJs as some may get wet, and book a restaurant or pub to eat in in the evening. For some reason DH doesn’t like booking and we drove round for ages trying to find somewhere two nights in a row.

We survived! It only drizzled most of the time. The wind was more of a problem really.

I'm actually glad we had not great weather as now we know we can enjoy camping without sunshine.

Ah fab. It's lovely just playing board games and spending time together isn't it.
