Please could someone explain camping stoves to me

We are going to France, first big trip. We have a 2 hob stove from PIL.

What kind of gas canister do I need? Does it actually matter? And do I need a regulator? If I just use a hose I'm imagining all the gas shooting out at once Grin

IME most double burner-type stocks run on Campingaz or similar (rather than Calor gas in the big cylinders that you put in camper vans). There’s a guide on their website that may help you. If it’s just got a hose you will need a reg on it to attach it to the canister.

Stoves not stocks. Don’t set fire to your stocks, or you won’t win any prizes at the flower show.

from what I've read most of Europe use campingaz so calor gas isn't as easily available to buy over there.

I've got a double burner and grill and can use calor gas 4.5kg of butane or campingaz 907. both are small.

butane and propane gas require different regulators. if in doubt go to go outdoors and ask the staff for advice. they're usually very very knowledgeable

Thanks. I'm still confused tbh I think we need to go to a physical shop and talk to someone - pictures on the Internet are only useful if you know what you're looking for!

I think a camping gaz 907 is what we need, unless the people in the shop say otherwise.

From what you’ve said it sounds like a 907 cylinder with the appropriate regulator will most likely be fine, but yes, good idea to check in store. Enjoy your trip!

Ours uses the 907. You needs to get them from camping shops though as they never seem to have them in garages. You'll need a regulator too so you can turn off the gas when not in use.

Campinggaz 907

Sorry, not sure how I posted that, I was meaning to google it to see if it is the bottle I use. Which it is’

Basically the sort of stove you seem to have work on any pressurised gas bottle. I.e Not the small tins or the aerosol style canisters.

You can choose propane or butane, propane is better if you will be camping in very cold winter temperatures, the vast majority of campers use butane.

The Campinggaz 907 is a handy size and lasts for ages.

The regulator had to match the gas bottle, not the stove. So buy your gas bottle and regulator together to check they are compatible.

If in future you decided to use propane (‘patio heater gas’) you would use the propane regulator that clmes with that bottle.
