We've got a small motor home and have been all over the uk, and got the ferry from hull-Rotterdam to stay in a site in the Netherlands . I'd love to go to france in the van but don't want too much driving once we get off the ferry in France. Also happy to consider other locations . Ideally we'd like a site that doesn't take more than 2-3 hours to drive to once we're off the ferry. Does anyone have any great suggestions?

Kids are 6 and 9, and ideally a site would have a swimming pool, playpark, space to ride bikes, and easy access into a small town.

Thanks for your collective wisdom in advance MNers!

Should add that we have to drive 4-5 hours to get to the ferry in hull , so hence why we don't want too much travel on the other side!

Chateax des eaux is nice. About four hours from Calais or there are some lovely sites in Nomandy. There is also Ainse de la Brick (sp) which is very near Calais.

Thank you @Flyingarcher , they look beautiful!

Our first trip abroad was from Hull to zebrugge. We went via bruges to Luxembourg - really easy driving. Luxembourg was beautiful and I'd love to go back. We stayed here www.campingkrounebierg.lu/en/home.html which was about 3.5 hours from the port.

I really want to go here www.duinrell.com/holiday-park/camping which is only 40 mins from rotterdam. I know it's a mn favourite.

Have a look at yelloh campsites in France - they are usually god and they have a few in north east France eg baie de somme near Calais which is a popular holiday area or in champagne a bit further south.

@millimat I've never considered Luxembourg , what is it like? That campsite looks lovely though.

Yes we've been to duinrell, twice! The kids adore it. Will probably go back again as there's so much to do. We've done the water park and theme park lots, visited the beach and zoo, and local village. We'd like to explore Amsterdam and Rotterdam a bit more next time.

Having braved taking the van abroad, I'd like to explore more options, and countries though. Plus I can actually speak French, whilst my Dutch is limited to; pannenkoeken, bier, melk, and other food necessities! Grin

Luxembourg is beautiful. Very green and lunch - amazing scenery ( especially around larochette with bundles of waterfalls). It was nowhere near as expensive as we expected either.
Lots of castles to explore for little children too.
DH loved it because there were so many nationalities rather than Brits abroad.

falconrising · 29/07/2018 11:25

That sounds glorious! @millimat ! What sort of prices did you pay for a main meal out? In holland we paid about £40-50 for a main meal for 4, including drinks. We wouldn't be eating out every night, but prob a couple of times per holiday when we go. We mostly buy from the supermarket and cook in the camper van. Waterfalls sound beautiful, and I love the idea of lots of nationalities. In Duinrell it's mostly Dutch and Germans, and brits are definitely in the minority, which is nice! If I wanted to be surrounded by English speaking brits I'd go to a haven site! (Which we have been to, as a cheap uk hol, but I'd much rather go abroad, with different languages, different experiences, better weather and nicer food!)

It was about 8 years ago we went so can't remember tbh. Not much different to france though.

We really like Huttopia sites - they have quite a few locations in N France. (We've only been further south with them though)
