After seeing it mentioned regularly on here I booked for us to go this year. We're off in a couple of weeks.

Any tips or anything I should know before we go?

Hello am fairly local to this so here goes:

There is a cafe but it doesn’t open until nine am They do pan au chocolate etc every morning but order the day before.

On a Friday they do pizza.
They do wine etc but it’s local and expensive.
There is a small shop for essentials if you forget something.

There are phone charging point, microwave, iron wash room and fridge. Barbecues at not permitted but you ca hire a fire pit.

It gets cold at night there.

There is a lake where people swim/canoe (you can rent these).

The information they give you at campsite is ok but not necessarily true!

Pubs: all accept children hundred house inn about 5mins drive away. You can walk there however it’s quite a busy and fast road.

Fforest Inn is 15 mins drive away and does lovely food but is usually busy. (Dog friendly)

Roasted Ox - on a very country road food is good but service sometimes slow.

Supermarkets: Llandrindod Wells have an Aldi and a Tesco.

Places to visit: quackers ( soft play) lovely usually busy war long sleeved top. Reasonable cafe.
Elan valley- lovely walks, visitors centre, hire bikes and go on a bike path to local town. The visitors center did only take cash for a while. There is a lovely park there too.

Painscastle- lovely walk and views of Herefordshire, Shropshire, and also Powys.
Llandrindod Wells small Town with lots of Victorian architecture.

Hay on wye is lovely.

Aberystwyth nice coastal town.

The old railway line is a good garden centre that gave activists every Wednesday of the holiday.

That's great. Thank you.

Is the lake very safe to swim in? Obviously DC wouldn't ever be left alone. They can swim without aids but still learning and getting stronger.

Yes it’s safe but deep in places.

Rhayader,Llandrindod and Builth Wells have swimming pools but Brecon has a bigger pool.

The lake has a reasonably large shallow area, I suspect that it's less deep now than it was in May! Wet suit shoes can be useful even if you don't wear wetsuits and many children still wear aids/jackets for extra confidence. You can hire canoes but many also take their own inflatables etc. Sometimes they run paddleboarding sessions for over 8's which are excellent. FF has a good sized drying room, so it's lovely to be able to put on a dry wetsuit, rather than a wet one!

Lots of lovely walks starting from the site- takes you up the hills for a good view and we there is a route to the nearest pub, however, the last part is on the road. You might also want to take kites/fishing gear/fishing nets if that floats your boat. If the kids have bicycles, then it's a perfect site to use them too.

There are about 4 large fridges and 2 freezers for campers' use. FF have always been very accommodating in having a supermarket delivery. They sell bread, ice creams as well as a good stocked shop for bits. If you want a pizza, order as early as you can as they are limited (you only need to order a base in an hour time slot, then turn up and decide on your toppings later).

We've rarely gone off site as it's our detox week- we've just allowed the kids to become feral whilst we read books in hammocks.
