have asked in another thread but still as confused. have read that the pegs that come with tents are not strong enough. have heard of storm pegs but cannot find any under that name. are they called something else in the camping world? or can anyone tell me where to get some? [feeling thick]
also are we mad contemplating our first trip this weekend?

have you looked here?

marymoocow · 29/05/2007 15:52

thanks for that, but i really need to know which ones to buy. Which are the best? Didn't know there could be sooooo many types of pegs.

storm pegs only needed if planning on can=mping in gale force/side of mountain.
If it is a 'cheap' tent, worth checking pegs to see if they are bit short/feeble/bendy. If so, just pop to a camping shop and buy some better ones. We use traditional metal hooks, about 6-10 inches long,m and up to 1/2 cm in diameter.

In strong winds it is often more about using all your ropes and having pegs in ground at appropriate angle so wind can't get 'behind' and lift them out.

BTW are those rope Guy or Guide Ropes ...have never been sure and I camp lots!!

thanks for your replies. its an outwell, so not a cheap tent, and there are two different types of pegs with it. Shall just ignore my rl knowledgeable friend who always confuses me and go with the ones we've got then.

We have an outwell and use the blue plastic pegs on guy ropes and at the corners to peg down and then use the metal ones to peg down rest of the tent and they are fine and we camped this bank holiday weekend in the wind and the rain (we did buy a few extra metal pegs though so that we had spares just in case of really really bad weather or if we bend any in hard ground).

A number of people on ukcampsite swear by Delta Ground Anchors www.deltagroundanchors.co.uk/. Because of their shape they don't pull out of the ground in strong winds. My previous tents have always been low profile backpacking types, and now that we have bought our first large family tent I am thinking of investing in some for the corner guys at least. I have no wish to see our tent become an expensive kite in the first strong wind.....

brandnewhelsy · 30/05/2007 15:57

We've just bought some delta pegs, testing them out tomorrow. Suspect we don't need them but DH does like a gadget.

marymoocow · 30/05/2007 22:38

Right, we'll go with the blue pegs at the corners and guy ropes and metal ones elsewhere, and hope for the best. Wind doesn't look too bad for this weekend, and we are going in land so fingers crossed......
