Waterproof bags to protect essentials from rain

We are camping in France this summer in a tent. The weather is usually pretty hot but with a few storms thrown in.

Our tent is quite reliable although is now pretty old and I worry about things getting soaked during storms. If the storms are followed by cloudy weather getting things dry would be a nightmare.

We pack our clothes in flattish long rigid plastic boxes which work well but aren't ideally shaped for our car boot so I can't more of these.

I think maybe something soft might be best in terms of fitting things into the car (boot and two long thinning roof boxes), but happy to consider all suggestions.

Thank you.

Any chance of investing in a new tent?

Like an old car, replace it just before it causes you a complete nightmare?

Or put your old tent up before you go and give it a good going over with Fabsil? (Depending on type of tent).

You can get roof protectors now that reduce the amount of damage that UV does in hot countries (and deflects the sun).

Sorry if this is a ‘suck eggs’ suggestion, but dealing with a leaky tent in the middle of the night or lying awake wondering if that was a drip sounds like hell! It’s not just clothes, what about your bedding, etc?

Go outdoors are selling large holdalls that look waterproof - they are a tough plastic but don't know if seams are watertight - here
Or you could just line boxes and bags with bin liners.
Any chance you could pitch the tent now and give it a going over with water proof spray? Also make sure you take some duct tape for emergency repairs!

Get some dry bags. Musto is one brand but there are cheaper alternatives, look at Mountain Warehouse, Amazon etc. Nice and squishy for packing into the car.

Brilliant, thanks for the tips.

Don't think we are quite in need of a new tent yet. It's still mostly ok. It's just the torrential rain that accompanies the few storms that we've had before that is an issue. I think that any tent may suffer when the heavens truly open.....
