Camping storage hacks

Does anyone have any cheap storage ideas for camping? First trip of the season next week and I get fed up with a messy tent with clothes lying around and food in bags. I can’t afford an expensive camping cupboard.

What do you already have in your house that you can use? We take some rectangular trugs, a pop up washing basket etc. A large ice cream tub could house all the small items, or even some of those containers that you get from takeaways.

For clothes, give everyone a bag for life from the supermarket (or two). Clothes can travel in these and they are easy to throw place items back in. Also squashable to help with packing.

For food, take plastic boxes with lids like this. If you take more than one, pack them inside each other with items and place all the lids on the top, this will help with space in the car.

Folding crates for food: they stack well. I tried a camp cupboard but it was not better. We use it for pans/crockery/cutlery/first aid kit now.

For clothes we use Ikea bags which are kept under each bed (camp beds obvs). Double function storage and insulation!

I'm going to get packing cubes for clothes in an attempt to keep things a bit more organised. We always end up with clothes everywhere and it drives me crazy.

I've got 2 big Really Useful Boxes. One is basically the storage for all the plates/cups/cooking stuff and is stored in these at home as well. The other one stores the lights /hookup /pump etc - things that are out and in use in the tent. I then use the empty box as food storage for the week.

I like the idea of bags for life for clothes though

Hanging plastic/cloth shoe racks if your tent is tall enough! Great for "bits and bobs" that you need all the time but haven't got a place!

Thanks all, some great suggestions. Love the hanging storage, we have quite a tall tent so that should work. Would be helpful for phones, colouring pens etc. I think collapsible crates might be useful, I don’t think we would have room in the car for the large plastic boxes but maybe with clever packing we would.

When we are pushed for space we just collect some boxes from the supermarket and gaffa tape them into a storage system. They can then be put into the recycling before coming home.

We used the hanging storage, worked well.

I reckon zipped laundry bags would work better thank bags for life (keep crap out of clothes and dirty washing smell to a minimum). I have some posh ones that I keep special clothes that the DCs have outgrown in but there are cheaper versions I'm sure.

We use flatish really useful boxes for clothes which double as bedside tables during the stay. Stack nicely in footwells for the journey.

Sometimes I take a metal trunk and use it as a countertop for cooking etc.

I used to take one of those cheap plastic chests of drawers for batteries/torches/food etc. That got a bit cumbersome.
