Camping in the Lake District - ideas please!

Im hoping someone can help me with some ideas of where we (me, DP and DS age 2) can camp in the lake district)
We will be there for 3-4 nights with campervan and awning but my initial searches have thrown up loads of sites with no showers - not ideal when we are planning to be out and about all day and have a grubby toddler!

So... I'd be very grateful for pointers to campsites you know of that aren't too remote, accept campervans onto pitches ( hook up would be nice but not essential), and a nice clean showerblock that ISNT coin-operated and preferably has a bath in it (for my shower-hating DS!)

Oh, and level pitches, a shop that sells fresh bread and a pub within spitting distance would also be a bonus 😁. Not too big an ask??

Look at Skelwith Fold caravan and campsite. It is just outside Ambleside so very handy for getting around and is one of the nicest sites we've stayed on.

I'd recommend Park Cliffe near Windermere, we had a tent so can't say what the motorhome piches will be like. It's a good few years since we stayed but from what I can remember it had a bar on site. The showers etc were fab, I think it evem had a bath. There were private bathrooms too but I seem to remember these being quite expensive to hire. Great park though.

Does it have to be the Lake District?

SlothMama · 17/05/2018 13:04

I second Skelwith fold, my family have been going there for years! The shower blocks are lovely and modern, has a great shop and a lovely play area. I don't know about it having baths? I vaguely remember it did, but you'd have to check!
There is a pub which is walking distance called the Drunken Duck which is really nice.

The Quiet Site (I think near Keswick) has bathrooms, with baths. It has an indoor play area in the bar too.

Also recommend the Quiet site, but it may possibly be a bit of a trek to then get to places you want to visit.

Happycow · 17/05/2018 18:20

Thank you all! I'm busy googling now 😁.

It does need to be lake district - we are visiting family nearby for a few days afterwards (and DP wants to visit a few places from his childhood!)

Whereabouts in the Lakes do you want to be near Western Lakes Northern Lakes etc. It’s a big place and some of the roads can get quite busy or are small and windy.

Workingmum34 · 20/05/2018 07:37

Another recommendation for The Quiet Site. Lovely site, great facilities and pub on site which is really nice.

Waterside farm at pooley bridge.

ScrubTheDecks · 21/05/2018 17:44

Sykeside , by Brother's Water?

Where in the Lakes do you want to visit? You can spend hours crossing the Lakes, especially if you have to go over one of the big passes like Honnister or Hard Knott ...and traffic though Ambleside can be terrible.

Try Low Wray, it's next to Wray castle national trust. Not stayed there but looked great. On shore of lake Windermere, little shop, pizza oven, play area, toilets and showers. And Wray Castle is great for little ones on a rainy day.

Park Cliff is fantastic, I’d highly recommend. Quiet, stunning scenery, spotless shower blocks, lovely little bar/restaurant on site and a small shop plus a fab children’s playground and stream running through the site. You can also rent a private bathroom (with bath) during your stay for not much at all, great with small children.

I've just come back from a trip to the lakes. I camped at waterside farm, ullswater and low wray, Windermere. Waterside was a nice site, good location right next to the lake. Low Wray was lovely, I had a woodland pitch and it was very peaceful and beautiful - I think the nice weather helped though! However a lot of the campervan pitches just seemed to be parked up at the side of the road, so not quite so picturesque as the tent pitches. Neither site had baths.
I stayed at kestrel lodge, near bassenthwaite last year and was impressed with that site too, quite basic but very well run and friendly.

Castlerigg just outside of Keswick? Never been but I see it come up over and over again on my caravan fb group and people love it.

MrsMotherHen · 27/05/2018 08:52

waterside farm is great I went a good 10years ago.

zebrapig · 29/05/2018 21:54

A large plastic tough trug makes a great makeshift bath. It's what I use for both of mine when camping.

helpfulperson · 29/05/2018 22:17

Another vote for Castlerigg near keswick. There are two Castlerigg Farm and Castlerigg Hall within 40 mtrs of each other. Both are good but Castlerigg Farm is cheaper

The National Trust sites at Great Langdale and Low Wray.
