Midges

We're headed up to Fort William at the end of May and dh is a walking midge banquet. I've got some of the Avon stuff but am worried that it's not enough.
Anyone got some good ideas, lotion and potions that are effective and yes I had thought of leaving him at home!

Over the head midge net? He'll look a total chump when he forgets and tries to drink his tea, mind. absolutely not taken from personal experience of course

Eryri1981 · 04/05/2018 19:06

In all seriousness I would not go to fort William at that time of year again!!

But since you are going...
Smidge is good if applied regularly and doesn't contain deet

Always where trousers that can be tucked into socks, and t shirts that can be tucked into trousers, and long sleeve t shirts at that!

Buy a head net and always have it with you.

Learn to eat with head net on... Harder than it sounds...I kept trying to put my sandwich into my mouth through the net...duh!!

Enjoy!!!

Hopefully after the cold winter it won't be so bad... Saying that the tops where still white in June the year I went and I got savaged!

travailtotravel · 04/05/2018 19:07

No. The Avon stuff is not enough. < voice of experience > . I can't go anywhere without long sleeves and 100% deet.

Learn to plot your route from car to building and vice versa before opening any doors...

Never ever leave a window (house or car) open by mistake (especially not with a light in inside), take some fly spray just in case you do forget!!

FuriousFifties · 04/05/2018 21:24

It's as I feared then, plot our route...bugger.

Don't think he'll care what he looks like and I might as well get some comic value out of it, so over the head nets it is cheers lancelottie and Deet, although I'll look out for Smidge too, thank you Eyri1981

Haven't got much choice of time of year as we're going to a cycling event. I am hoping that the weird weather may delay the little blighters.

travailtotravel knew it was too good to be true re the Avon stuff.

Despite the midges I am so excited, never been that far up the country camping before, it looks so beautiful.

If he does get bitten apply heat or cold to the area. For me it's a hairdryer or ice cubes.

Don't not use a Denman hairbrush to scratch the blessed fuck out of your poor legs

travailtotravel · 04/05/2018 21:46

@halfwitpicker - I use tiger balm. But have sympathy with the hairbrush approach.

Eryri1981 · 05/05/2018 08:59

It's not always totally horrendous... Just hope for a good breeze, and be prepared. [Smile]

georgedawes · 10/05/2018 20:01

Take up smoking?! Only thing that seems to keep the bastards away!!

Goldenbug · 17/05/2018 22:07

Didn't have a single midge when I went there in May a few years ago. They just can't cope with 60 mph winds.

I use Smidge. Seems effective. I did find a DEET one but I used it in the car and where I splashed it on the interior it melted the plastic. Giving DEET a miss now.

FuriousFifties · 17/05/2018 22:36

It melted the plasticShock Smidge it is then and a packet off ciggies!
Not long to go, I can't wait, all my camping stuff is lined up in the spare room.

Midges are moving further south now. We get them biting in central Scotland! 😣😣 avienore never used to be bad but is now. Midge nets keep windows and doors closed or use midge nets on them. Long sleeves and trousers. Hopefully there wont be so many this year. Have a great time x

FuriousFifties · 06/06/2018 08:58

Thank you for all the advice, Smidge worked very well, Avon not so much. I didn't get bitten once but dh and ds have come home with a fair few bites. There was a fair amount of fuss but they both looked so daft in nets that the comedy value diluted the moaningGrin

It was utterly beautiful, loved every minute and want to go back midges or no.
