Please tell me what to make on my Cobb

And also how 😄.

We got a Cobb last year, and so far we've only made burgers, sausages, chicken kebabs, and red onion. We've got the griddle and the frying pan as well (and the useful handle that the lid hangs on).

I love it so far, but would like some ideas as to what else to make. We tried beer bread once and it was an inedible disaster.

Also, what are those things called that you can burn in it, are they heat beads? We've only tried the Cobb things so far.

Thanks!

Great thanks, I'll get some of the gear beads to try I think 🙂.

Oh, we've made potatoes a few times - we just wrap ours in tinfoil, and haven't had an issue. Do you use the Cobb fuel things?

We only tend to do burgers, sausages etc. Use it at home a lot as it is quicker and less smokey than our big bbq, and at the beach, we tried the Cobb blocks but they were expensive, didn't last long and so we use normal lumpwood charcoal now.

MyRunMyPace · 22/04/2018 08:24

Yes, people seem to make amazing things using Cobbs! It would be impressive to roast a chicken in one, but then how would you deal with it on the beach 😄🤔?

I think chicken and vegetable kebabs might be the level I'm aiming for, and they turned out well when I made them last year. I'm going to try making pancakes next, so that we can have pancakes and strawberries.

We sold our Cobb, total waste of money. Believe me, I tried with it but it was unreliable and didn’t sear meat. It was ok for sausages and burgers but I like to cook chops, steaks, chicken, duck breast etc.. we bought a small cheap BBQ instead and it worked so much better!

MyRunMyPace · 22/04/2018 08:32

It's a shame that it didn't suit you Icky. We weren't sure before we bought ours, but it's been a hit for us both at home (chuck most of it in the dishwasher) and on holiday (portability).

We've had no problem using ours for steaks, chops, chicken breasts etc, I was including those when I said sausages, burgers etc and they do sear. A lot depends on the fuel though, we found the Cobblestones didn't get hot enough or last long enough.

The main thing with the cobb is that it takes a lot of trial and error to see what works. For fuel, I use either cobblestones or heatbeads/quality charcoal depending on what I want to do. Cobblestones are ready in 5 mins and burn for 2 hours at a slightly lower temp, heatbeads take a bit longer but give out more heat. You can add to either for a longer temp, but you'll need to start them off on the side.

The lid rest is actually not a good idea (and I have got one thinking it would). Loads of heat is lost and it will add minutes to cooking time. The cobb is not suited to anyone who likes to meddle with their cooking (my DH for example). When you have to lift, the secret is to get everything as ready as you can and if possible, lift the lid but keep it hovering above as much as you can, sometimes a 2 person job.

The extension ring is useful, as is an old microwave rack to raise food like bread/cakes as far from the heat source as possible. I also use a cadac pizza stone but I think cobb do one now?

My least useful accessory has been the wok, DH moans about doing something like a spag bol in it when it's quicker and cheaper on gas.

We never use the lid TBH, it's just a BBQ for us. A very well designed, light, sturdy, easy to carry, use and take home again BBQ, but expensive on that basis.

MyRunMyPace · 22/04/2018 12:49

We use the lid, but like the lid rest for when we need to turn things etc. I appreciate that heat is lost as we do this though.

I just came on here to post this thread.
I bought a Cobb years ago when everyone on here was banging on about them and it’s been sitting with our camping stuff unused. A bloody expensive waste of space at the moment so I need inspiration. I’m determined to make it worth the cost.

EqualityIllusion · 06/05/2018 16:10

TWTCJ, have you used it at all? I really like mine, don't get put off before you try it!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 10/05/2018 21:22

I used it a little the first year I got it but nothing adventurous. That was years ago though.
I don’t know where to start.
Also been reading stuff about fuel and I’m pretty sure we just have charcoal briquettes.
