Going camping for first time tomorrow with another couple.

We have a four man tent for our family and thats about it!

pls tell me what I will need (like do I need toilet roll). We are taking 10 yr old dd and 2 yr old ds.

Oh we also have 2 disposable BBq's between the two families, but we plan on eating out in the evening

do you have means of boiling a kettle? As well as said kettle, of course!

I would put loo roll in - always better to have surplus loo roll than the other way round.

A torch - for late-night trips to the loo

matches

ZipadiSuzy · 04/05/2007 16:26

No no no, not matches!!!!

purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:28

How are they going to light the BBQ then?

mosschops30 · 04/05/2007 16:29

we will have a lighter anyway cos I will smoke after a few drinkies!!

Ok:

Toilet Roll
Kettle
Lighter/Matches
Torch

anything else?

purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:45

the towsure site will give you an idea. Do you know anyone who could lend you one?

purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:45

I've got several - are you anywhere near Sheffield?

purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:47

If you've got a coolbox or coolbag it would be worth taking it to keep your wine/beer/milk in. A box also doubles as a seat when you're fed up of sitting on the ground.

mosschops30 · 04/05/2007 16:47

great so a cheap one for about £15, will come in handy I suppose for future things

aw purpleturtle was up your way last weekend, my mum is in chesterfield, but back in Cardiff now! Thank you much for the offer though

mosschops30 · 04/05/2007 16:48

yes we've got a coolbox each, do we need to take butter? (dont know why I thought of that) just thinking bout toast on the BBQ

OP posts:
purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:49

You must know somebody who's got one.

purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:49

If you want butter on your toast, you'll need to take bread and butter.

purpleturtle · 04/05/2007 16:51

A sharp knife is one of my essentials.
tea towel, mugs, cutlery (?) etc.

You really need to have a good think through each day to work out what you'll need.

bilblio · 04/05/2007 16:57

We usually eat out at night too, or have a BBQ, but usually take stuff to make bacon/egg butties in the morning while everyone is getting washed dressed etc. A bacon/egg butty is also great for persuading the lazy ones to get up.

I'll leave the food and drink to your imagination, but make sure you've got snacks and biscuits, camping makes you hungry

Sleeping bags
Rolly mats (but we use old duvets instead, warmer and softer.)

cagoules
At least one spare change of clothes, and one extra jumper each.

Camping stove
Frying pan, Saucepan (to cook in or boil water)
Cups, basic cutlery (not plastic, it melts), paper plates (saves washing them.)
A pop bottle for collecting water.

Wet wipes, (use them for cleaning cutlery, frying pans etc, as well as cleaning people.)

Torch & spare batteries (so many early nights because we've run out of batteries)

Something to sit on. It doesn't have to be chairs, blankets are good and multifunctional, but take something or you'll get a cold bum.

Toiletries, towels etc (which we always seem to forget.)

Not necessary, but we always use them.
A pack of cards
A thermos flask (in the morning when everyone has eaten we boil enough water to fill the thermos so we can have hot drinks at night without having to mess around with the stove again.)

Also when you go out for those meals at night borrow sachets of sauce, vinegar salt etc. It saves taking lots of bottles.

I'm sure there's stuff I forgotten, but that's typical of our camping trips. Even though I keep all the camping gear together in a box we always forget stuff.

Have fun! Wish I could go camping, but preggy belly is making sleeping in a bed difficult so I think sleeping in a tent would be pushing it a little.

bilblio · 04/05/2007 17:02

Oh yeah, cool bag. (Knew I'd forget something.)
When we stay for 2 nights we put enough defrosted stuff in for the first morning, then we put frozen stuff in for the 2nd morning. It keeps it fresh, and keeps the cool bag cooler.

FeelingOld · 04/05/2007 17:24

What are you sleeping on/in?
Dh and I sleep on airbed with duvet, dc's sleep on campbeds with sleeping bags when we go.

PeachesMcLean · 04/05/2007 22:06

one of these

This toy now counts as camping essentials in the McLean household. You just need to know you've got enough space to fire it without annoying the neighbours. DH can get the rockets to go a good 150ft+.
