Does anyone have a camper van (an old one)? Qu. about seatbelts.

On a whim, I told dh I wanted a campervan for my 40th birthday. At first he was a bit , but I think I've convinced him we'd use it (and that I'd use it with the dds, since he works a lot at weekends).

We are looking at getting something as cheaply as possible just to see how it goes and whether we actually do use it. (Lots of nice places to go within 1-2 hours of where we live, so we wouldn't necessarily be driving huge distances in it.) We've vaguely thought about Mazda Bongos, old VW campers and converted Ford Transits. But it seems a lot of these older vehicles only have seatbelts in the front seats. So if we go away 'en famille' what do we do about the dds (who are 5 and nearly 7)? Is it possible to get seatbelts fitted? When I was a kid my dad had an ancient converted Bedford van, and we kids used to just roam around the back un-tied-down. But that was before seatbelts were compulsory anyway. IIRC we used to sit on the floor of the van and play chess and things! But not at all happy with the idea of my dds not being strapped in.

Also, would love to hear from anyone with a Bongo. We've pretty much written them off, since it's not clear how the dds could use the 'upper storey'. Don't like the idea of them being shut up there at night and unable to get down if they get scared (which usually happens about 20 times a night when camping!) or need the loo or something. But is there a way round this.

Thanks...

Ours cost nearly a grand for the basic engine and then about 600 for all the new add on parts and has only done 3000 miles so I'm quite confident it will last a while if looked after right, fingers crossed for yours!
I will look out for your van at tatton and bring you a coffee!

I had [don't cringe - I'm a bit to admit this) a Vauxhall Chevette which did the starter motor thing so frequently that I used to carry a hammer in my glove compartment. Quite good for impressing blokes, when I'd pop the bonnet and leap out wielding my hammer, and get it going in seconds. The trick is knowing what to hit!

Did you read this piece in The Guardian this weekend? There's a link to the hire place at the end of the article. Sounds magical - I wanted to take to the road as soon as I finished reading it.

quadrophenia · 02/05/2007 22:11

misc I haven't forgotten you, my dp has taken the van in for a replacement engine, so i cannot take any pics but he is going to dig out a magazine article he has on seatbelts for you, so will post again tomorrow. keep your fingers crossed for this engine, its an old one but only cost us a few quid and although a gamble just has to be better than the old one!!

quadrophenia · 03/05/2007 14:19

right misc there is an article in mays edition of Volksworld Camper and Bus on the fitting of belts. you will be able to buy it from WHSmiths and my local tecsos has been known to stock it too. let me know if you can't get hold of it as i have one I can post you as long as you send it back!

Bit of a hijack we are converting ford iveco into a camper van and need advice on the best way to tint the windows to have abit more privacy. Anyone know about this?
We are lucky with our van as it was an old welfare mini bus so already had seats with sear belts in so we just left the two backward facing ones in and puled the rest out. had probs finding insurance though. good luck i'm off to vote now.

quadrophenia · 03/05/2007 14:34

hmmm ours are tinted and afaik it is a kind of film placed on the inside of the window. obviously you can get tinted glass but this is expensive, have ou thought about curtains?

cheers Q have purchased said mag and now just waiting for dh to get to it, although we have now decided to buy a new rock and roll bed so will wait till thats fitted and secure the belts around/to that.
Good luck with the engine, hopefully it will be fine, we are going to stanford this week-end so no doubt will pick up some other bits we don't really need like the chrome number plate surrounds dh bought (!!!)

quadrophenia · 05/05/2007 15:15

cool, have a good one at stanford, quite a few friends are going, a few are showing their cars/vans, wish we were but we are still vanless
