What do I need to know about caravans?

I'm hoping to pick the brains of some experienced caravanners here! I recently found out that I won a caravan - am really excited and DH and I are busily planning a summer of exploring the UK (with baby, and possibly Labrador, in tow). We're picking it up in about six weeks.

However...neither of us have any experience of touring caravans. Where do we start with learning what we need to know? A towing course is included in the prize, which is super helpful. I've been reading about loading, nose weights etc, is there a single good source to learn all this stuff? And what do we need to think about - storage, insurance...what else? Any top purchases?

Any advice welcomed!

If you passed your test after a certain year (about mid 90s) you need a towing test if the gross train rate is over 3500kg I think.

Loads of good info here:

We got our caravan last spring and love it. Major additional purchases were the Vango blow-up awning and Cobb barbecue Kitchen in a Box (which is fantastic and we use it in the garden in summer).

That's a good link ink, thank you.

On the driving licence - my understanding is the Basecamp has been specifically aimed at people without a towing licence, its light enough to be under the limit when paired with a suitable car.

We'll be heading to the big NEC show in Feb, so good to hear they're useful!

Amazing prize! Definitely start by joining the caravan and motor home club. The sites are all the same which (for us at least) becomes a bit boring and predictable but while we were learning the ropes of setting up etc knowing that there would be a clean wash block with decent showers and somewhere to wash up made things easier. Also the staff are usually really helpful especially if they know that you're new to caravans. They usually have spares for the basics (like drain hose on our first outing) too.
Your first trip should be somewhere really near home so that you can arrive with plenty of time to set up.
Enjoy it.

I'm so much sorry for retrieving this old thread, but I have been looking to insure my newly purchased van. I'm 22 . So can anyone please advise on what kind of van would be cheapest to insure for a young driver? Or any tips as to insurance providers etc? I read about insurance polices to cover for under 25’s but any real experience highly appreciated!
