Questions about electric hook ups on campsites

Sorry, I’m a newbie to all this and fairly clueless, but you were all very helpful on my last thread!

I’ve now got most of my camping stuff, including an electric hook up cable. If I go to Europe, does it work the same, ie voltage etc? Do I need an adapter or anything?

Also, what sort of things can I actually plug into it? Presume phone chargers are ok? What about more powerful things? Might sound crazy but thinking of the slow cooker Blush Presumably things like a kettle would be too much, but is there like a hard and fast rule as to what you can and can’t plug in?

Thanks in advance :)

You need to get a plug socket on a stake then plug in a 5 plug extension. Should take anything that usually plugs in - we take our nespresso!

I’ve got one like this. Was planning on putting it on a table so it’s off the ground.

Does that just plug straight in then and I can plug pretty much whatever into it?

What cable have you got?

Chargers are fine, they won't trip the switch. It's things like fan heaters and kettles that use more power. Generally, just don't have too much on at the same time and you'll be fine. Nothing wrong with taking a slow cooker, I take a table top induction hob!

UK websites usually say what you'll get on site, think they're usually 10 or 16 amps. Think some European sites can be a bit lower but don't have any experience personally

Ooh I’ve got a table top hob - didn’t even think about taking that!

It's brilliant, way better than using a gas one. So much faster, and obviously safer, so can use it in the tent.

Would a low voltage kettle be ok? I’ve got one here from when my parents used to have a caravan. Presumably the electric hook up is the same for caravans and tents?

One of the things I’ve not bought yet is a gas stove and it looks like I may be able to avoid that, which would make me happy as anything with gas bottles and naked flames involved makes me a bit twitchy!

Definitely fine with the kettle here, not sure in Europe though. Just don't have much else on at the same time. On a 16amp site I had kettle, charger and coolbox on at the same time.

As for caravan, it's the same, but if depends on what hookup you have. Is it 10amp? Can't make out from your photo.

I had one of those suitcase stove things, wasn't ever completely happy using it. They are safe when used properly, I just don't like them. Love the induction though.

The one I actually have says 16a plug fitted, I just hadn’t got it handy to photograph so pulled an image off eBay!

The hob I have is a solid plate one - are they much different power wise to an induction hob? I’d rather avoid gas if I can.

You may need one of
these

as some sites still have a 2 pin socket on the EHU box for the pitch.

I have finally added some domestic 2 pin to 3 pin converters like these to our kit, as if you hire a fridge, it will be a 2 pin. Only taken 3 trips to work this out!

Electric hook-ups sound exciting OP! How do you know when the spark is strong enough? Is it like a normal swingers' party?

JustBeingJobless · 30/12/2017 22:18

Grin Grin Grin

profpoopsnagle you can hire a fridge??? Camping sounds more like my kind of thing every minute! I’ve added those two little gadgets to my Amazon basket, thank you.
