I need a decent camping cookbook - any ideas?

Basically as it says above. Previously I have done mostly pasta or BBQ. We have three hobs but no grill. If anyone can reccomend a decent book that has UK measurements that would be great. Most seem to be for the USA market.
As an aside, does anyone have a suggestion for a substitute birthday cake that I can make on the stove. 5 families from my antenatal group are camping for may half term and two of the boys have birthdays (age 5). I was planning on pancakes with bananas and melted chocolate but if any of you can come up with something better please share.
Thanks
Nikki

TESCO

Seriously why sweat it, the kids cake you buy there have a shelf life of a couple of weeks.

As to cookbooks, well IMHO camping is about having fun and chilling, I am not producing gormet food too, it is my holiday. I do pastas and one pot things all the time, I also did some nice fried chicken last year which went down well in france. Olive oil, chicken, which you have rubbed with salt/pepper and ,mixed herbs, fried!! served with fresh french salad and bread. In the UK it is one pot and packet stuff, I prefer a nice glass of wine, BBQ is pushing it for me

spot on crunchie

i don't do camp cooking, we have picnics and occasional meals out

crunchie · 18/04/2007 20:21

also nikki there is a thread below with ideas that sound great (although they do involve more than opening a packet)

For some reason when I camp in france I simply do loads of salad, with everything and loads of bread, so in a week we eat out once, otherwise it is simple meats/pasta/rice and salad.

I see where you are going Crunchie. The idea with the cake / pancakes is that the kids would actually get involved with doing it.

I don't do gourmet food either but we have the week in half term and then two weeks in France in August. I need to branch out a little. Thanks for the chicken recipie, i'll give it a go.

bbq chicken drumsticks?

TheDog · 18/04/2007 20:22

its gordon ramseys is to die for

Bbq chicken

For the marinade
3 garlic cloves, crushed
6 tbsp tomato purée
4 tbsp balsamic vinegar
4 tbsp dark brown sugar
4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1-2 tbsp Tabasco sauce
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp smoked sweet paprika
1 tbsp chilli powder
olive oil, to drizzle
8 free-range chicken legs, trimmed of excess fat

1 In a bowl, mix together the marinade ingredients. Spread over the chicken and leave to marinate for at least an hour or overnight.

2 Scrape off any excess marinade from the chicken pieces and drizzle with a little olive oil. Place on a hot barbecue or grill and cook for about 25 minutes, turning occasionally. When browned, brush the chicken with the marinade and cook for another 10-15 minutes, turning and basting frequently, until cooked through. To test if the meat is done, insert a small knife into the thickest part of a chicken leg ? the meat should no longer be pink at the bone.

If you want to cook this in the oven, bake the chicken legs at 200C/Gas 6 for 30-40 minutes until cooked. Baste with the marinade 10 minutes before the end of the cooking time.

no this is unwise, really, you are camping

if you must do such things why not get them to decorate it or do a victoria sponge sandwich or something?

oh I have remebered another good chicken on e I do all summer BBQ's in teh oven and camping.

Big tuperwear box, loads of olive oil, lemon juice, fresh herbs (lomon thyme and rosemary) loads and I mean loads of chopped garlic, salt and paper. Chuck in chicken 24 hrs before and take in the box. Greek chicken (I usually do a full greek salad with this at home, but a tomato, cucumber, feta soimple salad is good too.
