Getting ill when camping

ChorusLine69 · 02/09/2017 07:49

This is our second camping trip this year and both times we have ended up ill. This time we have had some kind of virus/sore throat my DH started with, then DS got it, now me. DS got it yesterday and we dosed him up on calpol and we are going home today, thankgod.

Last time it was my DD who got a cough and cold etc

Is this the norm? We have a heater and plenty of layers so I think we are all warm enough but I don't think I can keep camping if we get sick every time😞do others find this too? Or just bad luck.

Are you airing your tent and bedding etc?

00100001 · 02/09/2017 07:53

You might be getting sick because you're all in a warm tent together

ChorusLine69 · 02/09/2017 07:58

Do you think we would be better without heater? Not sure that we really need it , I could just use extra bedding.
I didn't think to air bedding - is this what I should be doing? I know I sound clueless, bit new to camping so all advice v helpful!

I'd ditch the heater, just wear lots of layers. Also the tent material might be playing a part.

When camping I often feel a bit like I have a cold when I wake up. Think it's due to the warm and slightly damp air as I feel fine once up.

You need to air the tent out and put your sleeping bag in the sun for a bit.

Think about it, you're all inside a warm and slightly damp tent overnight. Breathing each others air.

Definitely air the tent during the day, and drag your bedding out (or at least your sleeping bags) and let them all breathe a bit.

You definitely don't need a heater! Body heat and layers will be plenty :)

Thanks - I already said I was clueless but I do appreciate all the advice. Will make sure I do this next time we go. And will leave the heater at homeSmile

I never air our bedding, never get ill when camping (touch wood!)

Could you be getting hay fever? Pollen and various spores drop down as the air cools in the evening, and then you get into bed with lots of pollen and spores all over your hair and skin, your clothes in tne tent?

Try taking some anti-histamine and see if it makes a difference.

Check you've not got mould on tent from storing not completely dry as that too would cause illness. I LOVE camping, although not so much the time I came back from a folk festival with swine flu, that wasn't much fun for a few weeks!

It is most likely coincidence and bad luck I reckon.
