Mosquito repellent ideas please

Just realised where we're camping next week is right next to a river - we're going to get eaten alive! Any ideas in good mosquito repellents for in a tent would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry too much if tne water is moving.

We use Mosi Guard roll on repellent, it is natural but actually effective.

Don't use any spray inside your tent.

You could try those big outdoor citronella candles.

I've been almost smug with my bite-free skin, 2 weeks into camping in Spain and France. I've used Avon skin so soft.

We came to Carcassonne 3 nights ago and I've been savaged 😡

I've counted 3+ bites on my lower body alone, albeit smaller than normal, but still very itchy.

Why?! Are Carcassonne mozzies immune to Avon?!

Deet will melt your nail varnish so consider what it will do do your tent!

guess what I'm buying today?

NannyR · 15/08/2017 11:09

I've never had much luck with skin so soft, I still get covered in midget bites. I usually take deet, which works well, although this year I took smidge, which worked just as well but was a lot more pleasant to use in terms of smell etc.

Another vote for Avon Skin so Soft here, just had a week in Spain and was lovely to use as after sun and seemed to keep mozzies away.

Sparkletastic · 15/08/2017 13:44

Skin So Soft works for me.
Arf at 'midget' bites.

NannyR · 15/08/2017 13:47

Just realised that was an auto correct!!!

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/08/2017 13:48

We camp in France next to a river and use citronella candles outside, insect repellent on ourselves and a mossie spray in the tent at about 6pm which seems to keep the numbers down

Orangebird69 · 15/08/2017 13:49

Avon skin so soft. My angling dh swears by it.

doesitwork · 15/08/2017 13:57

I've seen this recommended on other forums and I've heard it from someone else in RL who swears by it.

Original source lemon and tea tree shower gel - £1 from tescos and the like.

I'm intrigued to see if it works for others?

Maximum strength Jungle Spray.

TestTubeTeen · 15/08/2017 19:49

We use Deet (Jungle Formula) on calves, ankles , feet etc, but it is so noxious, so Mosi-guard round our necks, faces , hairline.

And roll on. Jungle Formula will strip nail varnish, so no spraying it in or near your tent. You risk dissolving it, compromising the fire retardant, and tne warterproofing.

WelshMoth · 15/08/2017 23:08

I should proof read!

I've had 30+ bites, not 3!

I'd love to know why ASSS no longer works for meEnvy

DEMum101 · 16/08/2017 00:06

DD gets eaten alive so we use Jungle Formula. It seems to work ok. Sometimes I think it is worth waiting until you get somewhere and buying what they sell locally. We were eaten alive in the west of Ireland until we bought what they recommended in the chemist there and then we were fine.

This year in France DH bought an electric thing for inside the tent which attracts the mozzies and then zaps them. It worked well once all other lights were off in the tent as otherwise they werent necessarily attracted to the zapper. You need EHU for that though.

samlovesdilys · 16/08/2017 19:47

Use boots strongest spray on us (especially feet/ankles)have a 'plug in' repellent in tent (and keep doors zipped up), burn citronella candle at table. Also always buy a basil plant and keep it on table - use during hol- but also seems to keep bugs away...

notinyournelly · 16/08/2017 22:39

Sounds mad but roll on deodorant round my ankles.

LakeFlyPie · 16/08/2017 22:43

We bought a can of Smidge to try out whilst riverside camping in N Wales. Not tried it out yet as the 40 mph gusts of wind and the lashing rain seem to be an extremely effective midge repellent Confused

GinAndToast · 17/08/2017 16:14

I use proper full on 100% deet when I am going somewhere with a malaria risk. Yes, it damages my nails, and discolours hair, but it's better than malaria 😂

I use a less toxic "natural" spray otherwise until I get bitten and reach for the deet

Not tried the Avon stuff though. I will give that a go I think in non malarial places.
