Camping etiquette

Started camping this year, great to see kids playing together in communal area 😁

What times should kids be allowed out from and until? I thought 8am and back in at 9:30pm? Does this sound reasonable?

Agree with PPs about no music and no TV. Artificial/electronic noise = bad. Camping is supposed to be getting back to nature. Don't like yapping dogs either. Love to hear kids playing though, quite happy for them to stay up as late as adults.

Don't let your feckin kids go in and out of other people's tents and awnings, help themselves to other kids' toys - I can barely tolerate my own children holiday, let alone other people's! Mine are similarly banned from visiting their new found friends, they can congregate in the playground.

My parents used to force feed us radio 4 when camping. Not just the archers sadly, but vigorous intellectual discussions and the plays 🙄

Now I am older, I love radio 4 myself now, but I'd have loved it if someone had told them to turn it off.

Mind, they were also sticklers for ludicrously early bedtimes as well, so it was off by 7 🤣

I am free with my own kids when camping. They are not early risers thank god. It's a wonder if they are out of pyjamas by 11.

But their passionate playing of "wholesome" card games and board games on an evening would be potentially more annoying than music being played quietly 🙄 They don't shout or scream, but still.

Looking up more wild camp sites where nobody else is around 😂

It's really just about choosing the right campsite. Plenty of people are fine with music, you just need to look for the site that has liberal policies about it.

I've thought of another bugbear. The sites where the serious climbers hang out always have people waking up at 6 so they can get a really good day's expedition in and lighting their top-of-the-range petrol stoves that sound like a jumbo jet taking off.

Dona, loud parenting at 6am is equally unacceptable, I agree. You can't do anything about your kid waking up early but you can wax lyrical about the toilet block in a whisper.

Kids need to be told not to run through people's pitches. That if you tun between a tent and the table and chairs it is like running into someone's hall and taking a shortcut through their kitchen.

And especially not to play tag round and round other people's tents. Especially between tent and cooker.

Was a bit Shock last week when children were shrieking in the playground st 7.35 am. Luckily it was just the one morning and I'm and old crock with a deaf ear, so I just turned over and went back to sleep Smile

We have the radio on low when we are camping ...kids growled at to be quiet before 8.30 and would expect it to be quietish by 10.30 , but it does depend on the site...last year I had to endure my neighbours witty banter til early hours ...thought I'd get revenge by getting up and clanging around at 6am , emerged from my tent to be greeted with a cheery 'Good Morning !"from him - it all adds to the charm I suppose !

MrsHathaway · 12/08/2017 11:40

We've never encountered a radio when camping and I think I'd probably be privately catsbum about it at any time of day - as I would be if I could hear your radio from your house or car.

9am-8pm for spirited noise, 8am-10pm for outdoor conversation noise. We try to keep conversation to a murmur outside those times.

I agree with pp that you want a site with people like you to have a successful camp - either you're all about surfing/castle building and up early for day trips, or you're all about lazy mornings and late night Wine Both of those are valid holidays, and valid camping ... but they make poor campsite neighbours to each other!

GinAndToast · 12/08/2017 12:55

There's a difference between music and voice radio though.

Music radio would be a no from me (same as tv or other music). Voice radio not too loud would be fine though.

But then, that's what I grew up with camping as a child, so it's understandable I think that I guess.

Will have a muse about it all now.

rightwhine · 12/08/2017 12:58

Music on campsites, garden and beaches are just so unfair especially if you are far enough away to not hear the song but just the irritating bass.

toomuchhappyland · 15/08/2017 11:34

If your neighbour could hear your radio, it's too loud. Other people's music is my pet camping hate. I have no issue with the noise of kids playing, but music or loud TV is rude.
