Tips for a long car journey

We are going camping in Italy this year. It is about a 1200k drive (no ferry or train) from where we are.

A friend told me yesterday that she has car journey gifts each year. They buy little gifts (books, little toys, etc) and just chuch the kids something new every hour or so. She says it works a treat. My other friends who were there as well all said that they do this too. I obviously missed that memo Grin.

So it got me wondering. What other genius memos have I missed? What are your tricks to keep the littluns occupied (apart from ipads/dvds)?

Dd is 5 so she got a printed sheet on a clip board and a pen and ticked off all the pics as she saw them. I put on things like a helicopter, a cow, five cars in different colours, an Eddie stobart van, etc.

We always used to listen to audio books on long journeys, things like Roald Dahl, Famous Five etc. You could do something like get the David Walliams books on audio, something fun the whole family will enjoy.

Audio books, portable dvd players, tablets. Take breaks for toilet/stretch legs. There are eyespy books for journeys where you tick off all the things you see, there are different ones depending on how you're travelling eg car, ferry etc.

I bought a children's quiz book and it entertained us all for hours. Little things like rubix cubes also work well and good old car games like the alphabet game and some more imaginative ones keep our DCs entertained (including one called count the cars which they can play for ages and I only have to offer random numbers every so often when I'm asked how many I've counted).
Audiobooks are also great.

I noticed loads of cheap audiobooks in the Works the other day.
