Dh and I have been talking about camping for a while.
Its something I've always pulled my nose up at because I'm a bit of a materialistic kinda gal who likes her makeup and hair straightners, lol but I know full well that my dd will absolutely love it and ds will get something out of it even though he's only 7 months atm.

Sooo, since we are total beginners in this camping lark, where would you recommend a family like us to go?
Preferably near/at the coast and not too expensive.

All advice welcome

where do you live? start near home - in case you hate it!

Also, first time you go, eat in pubs in the evening - break yourself in gently!

Nbg · 25/03/2007 14:54

We're in North Yorkshire so we have east coast not a million miles away and the dales/lakes.

I don't know that area at all but I do recommend that you think about what sort of site will suit your family. We love the basic ones without entertainement and pools etc but thats not for everyone. The sites with more going on tend to be more expensive but if you and your children prefer a lively holiday it will be worth the extra money.

Nbg · 25/03/2007 15:13

Tbh I'm not really bothered about entertainment, pool maybe but its not a must because we'd just spend so much time at the beach.
We'd probably have our dogs with us to.

Does anyone have any links for sites?

Your best bet is to choose a location that you like the look of - we quite like Filey over your way, a bit quieter than say Brid or scarborough - go to their Tourist Information site - look at a list of sites, choose one that you like then check out the reviews on uk camping

or tell us the area then let us find one for you!

Lucycat · 25/03/2007 15:16

any of these any good to you?

Nbg · 25/03/2007 15:17

Well me being me, I'd dove in at the deep end and say somewhere on the south west coast. I've always wanted to go there. Padstow and the likes.

Filey is ok, Scarbourough we love but its hell in the holidays and Brid I'm not so keen on.

Well I know that that PeachyClair is going to Pentewan Sands down near Mevagissey and rates it highly.

Or you could join giraffeski and I at Trevornick near Newquay

Great links.
Thank you.

Babies love tents! It's just lovely watching them roll about.
We're going here as we're still not too confident. We need a pub and restaurant and takeaway food options!

PeachyClair · 01/04/2007 19:33

Aaah- there's a Forest Cmapsite oop North in Yorkshire (look on the forest holidays website)- excellent place to start (with exceptionally clean toilet blocks lol)

South coasst is my stomping ground (though live there no more). If youre dubious about buying a tent for a trial do book when we're not away and I will loan you ours (I am sure we can find a drop off point in Somerset for you to colect from).

Lots of good sites down that way TBH- Peachesmclean recommends east fleet farm in Weymouth, but if you pop over onto uk campsite website you will find lots and lots of ideas with reviews.

Do book early- its getting trendya nd they fill up so quickly now!

Cloudhopper · 01/04/2007 19:33

Hope I'm not the voice of doom here, but unless you are a seasoned camper then i would get a mobile home with a baby, before taking the plunge with a tent when they are a bit older.

The reason being that it is difficult getting them to sleep and staying asleep in a tent, especially if it is cold and going light v early in the morning. It can be v stressful if you have a baby crying in the middle of the night in a tent, worrying that you are waking everyone up.

I love camping, and I would hate you to have a really horrible experience the first time such that you never go again.

PeachyClair · 01/04/2007 19:35

(If you fancy Isle Of Wight nodes piint is fab- on the beach, AND they have electric points where you can use your straighteners in the blocks ) )- look up park resorts for that
