It got buried a bit in my other thread, so have started a new one.

We are completely novice campers, been once and enjoyed it but had real trouble cooking on the gas stove in the wind. What is the best way to shelter it? Don't really want to have to buy a gazebo/awning, but wondering if this is the only way really. Would a windbreak do it? What do others do?

You can buy sheltered stove screens. We use windbreaks which seem to do the trick. Please don't think of cooking in an awning though.

Yes to stove screen.
No to any fabric near stove. And definitely no cooking inside.

We had a screen thing that went round the stove but it still wasn't enough where we were (on the coast) to stop the gas going out. Is a windbreak my only other option then?

I wonder if cooking on a lower table would help too.

When I meant cooking under a shelter I meant something like these things - www.winfieldsoutdoors.co.uk/equipment/tents/gazebos-shelters/ definitely not cooking indoors as such. But in any case I was really hoping not to have to buy any more big kit as we can't fit it in the car!

We have been known to use a tarpaulin to make a shelter under trees as our kitchen!!
One year in Scotland and some terrible weather we had a little Robin come down every meal time on the back of the actual stove to get a warm!!

We bought a couple of cheap ground sheets and some generic poles and lines. We've not had cause to use it yet, but the plan is to set up a shelter, with a roof and one side. The side would act as a windbreak, hopefully!

We always use beach wind breakers.
