Best tent for high winds?

Mama1980 · 11/06/2017 08:47

Just hoping someone had any advice about tents that stand up well to high winds, my last tent died in 70mph winds in Scotland and with another trip planned I need something that will hold up at least ok.....? Needs to sleep at least 3/4.
Thanks :)

Outwell Montana or bell tent have both withstood gales for us.

I haven't tested it myself, but I have heard that the Vango tents with the tension bands are very good.

If you can cope with the complications and weight of a canvas pyramid tent, they are not called Dutch Storm Tents for nothing!

Look at the Alaska on the Obelink website.

70mph winds is a serious camping challenge.

My Vango has done well in high winds, and people talk highly of steel poled tents, like the Outwell Monty, but if you are in wind in Scotland a lot, I would look at a Dutch Storm Tent.

Where in the country do you live? Cross Camping near Cambridge advise on tents for high winds.

The other thing is to look at how you do your guy ropes. Add extra ones and peg them at 45' to the seam (the standard guy being in line with the seam).

What gave way on your last tent? Poles, or fabric?

We camp all year round and have been the only tent standing at times (three times one August, all in Scotland).

We have a deWaard Albatros and a Tentipi Safir, both big investments chosen for the way they can deal with storms because if we have got a three week trip planned we go anyway and might have to put up with all sorts of extremes as we generally head North.

Those sorts of shapes are it really.

Small tents are less likely to be wrecked too, in 55mph winds at Glenbrittle a couple of summers ago we were in our tipi, the other tents who made it through the night/storm were little msr type tents.

We gave shelter to a couple with a tiny baby in our tent that night, their tent disappeared into the bay - it was really odd but fairly nice experience, I met the woman in the toilets sobbing with her little baby - we are still in touch.

Our Vango did not survive last weekend's winds around Bristol...

Thanks everyone, I'll look at those suggestions, the Dutch storm tents looks amazing. I'm not too far from Cambridge so may pop there.
The poles snapped and the tent ripped on my old one, cue the whole inner tent was flooded, we ended up booking into a hotel instead.

We've got vango that has survived 60mph winds. You get what you pay for with vango, they do everything from bottom of the range tents up. I'm not sure that any palace like tents would survive a gale though. Need something relatively small.

Assuming it's not a cheap as chips tent, extra guy lines and decent pegs go a long way to help. Very big bendy-pole tunnel tents aren't very strong.

We also have an Outwell Wolf Lake 5 tunnel tent, it's proved to be gale-proof but it should be for that price! It has a rigid pole framework so doesn't blow sideways. I don't know what the airbeam type tents are like, obviously no poles to snap but how flexible are they?

NettleTea · 23/06/2017 23:38

I'd agree about the dutch storm tents, we have a dewaard albatross and a Zilvermeuuw, which both stand up really well. A geodesic dome is also great

Obelink seem to have discontinued the Alaska, which is a big shame.

winewolfhowls · 24/06/2017 19:04

You need Delta pegs too. Makes such a difference in wind.
