Thunderstorms and tents with metal poles?

What do you more experienced campers do when there is a thunderstorm whilst you're camping? I've been camping for a few years but have luckily avoided bad storms (probably just jinxed myself!), but it's just occurred to me that laying on the floor, less than a metre away from an upright metal pole (I have a three metre bell tent) is probably not that safe in the event of a thunderstorm.

I've looked online and the advice seems to be to sit out storms in your car or a building, do people actually do that in reality, I.e. in the middle of the night when it's bucketing down and everyone's half asleep? Or do you just pull your sleeping bag over your head, go back to sleep and hope for the best. Is there a significant risk of a tent being hit by lightening?

The poles aren't too much of an issue, the risk that there will be a nearby ground strike, or tree strike flashing over the ground is higher. (special interest of mine)
Airbeds make little difference to safety.

When storms are very active I do relocate us all to the car.
