keycamp etc recommendations for Spain?

We are looking at flying to Barcelona and camping somewhere along the coast north of there - anyone have any campsite recommendations? Ideally we would like something shady, low key and near or on the beach; restaurants within walking distance would be good too. Ds's will be nearly 3 and 5.
Many thanks!

We stayed with Siblu at Cambrils near Salou.
I wouldn't say it was low key but not the biggest. Caravans are quite close together but there are trees, the 2 pools are very nice and the kids loved the shallow bit with the elephants at the smaller pool.

The on site restaurant was lovely not too expensive, the cafe type place was tacky, and but the out door areas are stepped around the end of the pool are nice enough.

Not easy to walk to other restaurants, nothing to the west/ inland from the camp, half mile walk the the shore from the site, you have to walk down a narrow road with no pavements, then you can choose to cut across the railway or carry on around the tight bend in the road. Then you cross the busy road were there are restaurants and shops.

Beach area is nice, pedestrian/ bike path along the shore and shady play areas dotted along the shore as well as benches.

Cambrils town to the south (2/3 miles) is a more traditional type town than Salou and has more character. You can walk or cycle all the way there on the beach path or there is a glass bottom boat goes between a few places (you can't see much out the bottom once the boat gets going )

Sorry meant to say they have Keycamp too.

Thanks very much skribble - I'd picked up on your posts about salou in the archive, am i right in thinking you didn't really enjoy the holiday??
We really need to go further north of Barcelona - fly to Gerona - ideally close to a place called Begur where dh's dad will be staying.
The Spanish sites do look rather huge - not our usual style - but as long as we can walk to beaches we should be happy....

No I didn't really enjoy it that much, but then I am not into beach/ med holidays.

It was a big site and a bit to butlins for me, I was freezing at night (my fault) and the caravans were so close together, plus Dh expected us to eat in at night .

Something much more low key would have been better, this year we are trying Italy, a smaller site on Lake Garda. You think I would learn .

I should have twigged when it looked a hige site on google earth .

We had a nice time on a small site near Lake Annecy so you never know, you might be ok! But that was out of season with preschoolers so plenty of space on the site.

We have stayed at El Delfin Verde, near Estartit. It was a gret site & the entertainment even got us up to watch it (normally avoid like the plague!). The beach is fantastic & direct access from the site.

elliott · 06/03/2007 16:45

Thanks Milliways- I've been thinking about that one. Who did you go with and where did you fly to?
Was the site noisy? Can you think of anything else I ought to know?
Thanks!

We drove from Dover! Actually we stayed at La Carabasse in France for a week & then drove down, but last year we drove to Perpignan (La Sirene) which would probably do if you want to fly, but it is easily driveable with an overnight stop and then you have your car to tour with.

TBH would need a car as we drove to loads of places from the site. The town a bit further up has loads to do & the beach their is brilliant as well. The beach on site is quiet as ONLY accessible through the site (rivers cut off either side).

The site wasn't noisy where we were, but it is HUGE! If you are near the entertainment area then might suffer if need an early night! Has a supermarket with well priced food on site (cheaper than the nearest offsite one) + it's own mini-market, post office, hairdresser etc.

We went with SIBLU, late August, but you can book direct (I kept a brochure in case we ever go back again).

Thanks again. Driving not really an option as we live in Newcastle....
