DD just announced that the group are planning a camping trip. She only 4 and I thought that might be a little bit too young? Or is it more likely that she has overheard the Brownies (who are on at same time, in same room) talking baout their trip and she just assumes she is goimg too?

My dd goes to Rainbows - about to graduate up to Brownies. She has been going for a year and there has been nothing like camp mentioned. The biggest thing she did was attend a Guide/Brownie?Rainbow activity day in the nearby Scout camp.

It probably depends how dynamic (and foolhardy) the leaders are

princesscc · 27/02/2007 20:13

I am a Rainbow Guider and I can assure you that she is not going camping! Even Brownies are not allow to sleep under canvas! Rainbows can have 'sleep overs', but there are very strict rules on how long they can be. (Think its 12 hours). Also you have to be 6 to be involved in a sleepover.

Phew...She the youngest there by quite a bit - worried me that she might be going, and at same time it worried me that she might be left out for being too young - next up is 2 years older than her. Cant please me, huh?

DS was in the beavers and they visited the troup campsite. Beavers went for the day, Cubs 1 night and the scouts stayed the whole weekend. Perhaps they are doing something similar. Or could be an activity day where they might put a tent up and have a campfire.

my daughter is in the Brownies but when she was in the Rainbows she went on an over night stay but that wasin a big hut with like a dormatory as the bedroom it was less than 24hrs . It wa slast year when she went when she was 6.

Round here you cant start rainbows until you are 5

Marina · 15/03/2007 10:11

Beavers don't stay out overnight so I'd be surprised if Rainbows did

Woodcraft folk let 6yos go camping (under canvas) without their parents. I'm under pressure to let 6yo dd1 go camping for a whole week in summer. It's tempting, on the cheap childcare front, but I'm sure it'll be totally unsuitable for my rather young and totally airy-fairy forgetful child.

KathyMCMLXXII · 15/03/2007 10:20

No wonder people fear the Woodcraft Folk.

fennel · 15/03/2007 11:12

Indeed, they're not for the over-protective parent

Having been on one of their camps, it was quite large and random. They don't really believe in Authority or Rules. I bet they could easily lose a small child for ages without noticing.

Indith · 15/03/2007 11:27

princesscc Brownies can go under canvas! But no don't worry Lmccrean Rainbows don't camp (god the nightmare that would be Guides are bad enough!)

By the way, if I may princesscc I'm about to become unit Guider for a reforming Rainbow unit, not done Rainbows for 5 years what the hell are the roundabouts and the jigsaw and stuff?

PeachyClair · 17/03/2007 19:29

Indith LOL- I left just after the conversion!

The roundabout thing is brilliant oif you do it with the girls, let them choose the activities they want to do. We had a vote and they all adored it, because they felt they had input. You can even have a term planning night like that- so much mroe fun (imo) than sitting by yourself because the assistant doesn't fancy it trying to imagine activities for 10 weeks .

Have you got the training pack?

rainbows at 4??????? Either they've changed it in the last 2 years, or someone is stretching the rules a little? It was always girls start rainbows at 5, boys start Cubs at 6.

Skribble · 19/03/2007 22:11

Yes Rainbows are age 5-7 except N Ireland where they take them from 4 years. Brownies start from 7 years.

Beavers are 6 to 8years, cubs are for 8 -10.5 years.

princesscc · 19/03/2007 22:23

Indith - Roundabouts & Jigsaws are the new programme which was rolled out about 2 years ago. Its fantastic and very easy to follow! It makes planning a whole lot easier. They can earn badges as a group and choose what they want to do together. Northern Ireland Rainbows start at 4 and...brace yourself.....Rainbows can now have over nights!!!! Obviously you need to have a camp permit, but IMO the rules for ages and adults and length of time they can be there are so involved, I'd rather not bother! Leave that to the Brownies I say!

There are some inaccuracies in these posts regarding girlguiding - I would recommed that parents contact local units for information. Rainbows can have a sleepover - but inside. https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/what-we-do/rainbows/
Some leaders may not choose to take Brownies away camping but they certainly can spend a night under canvas - and often do!

Did you not notice that the posts were from 2007? Perhaps they were correct at the time?
