aDad · 24/02/2007 13:33

mozzies schmozzies
it's only cornwall!

NappiesGalore · 24/02/2007 13:44

are you suggesting im a soft southern whinger?

OP posts:
aDad · 24/02/2007 13:53

No, I guess I can sense that you have THE FEAR after a bad experience 2 years ago, and are worrying about things more than you should!

Anyway it's the deadly king cobra you have to look out for in cornwall

NappiesGalore · 24/02/2007 16:43

you sense right adad.
rented what looked like a dream villa halfway up a mountain in mallorca. and it was a dream villa, unless you had small children in which case the unfenced pools, stone stairs, wide open banisters, remote up-a-mountain location and gardens filled with prickly plants, scratchy rocks and precarious drops, coupled with a 1yo who would only sleep for about 2 hrs at a time all night every night, meant it was the least relaxing time i have ever had in my life. couldnt relax for a second, and believe me, im a v laid back mama usually, so i wasnt just being highly strung. couldnt go for walks, coz i couldnt push a pushchair up the mountain dirt road, so had to drive everywhere... oh was pants.

annnyhoo, enough whinging. im off to find truly small child friendly holiday ideas...

Thought thread title was tipsy holidays in Cornwall, would be up for that!

filthymindedvixen · 24/02/2007 17:44

It was our best ever family holiday (more Famous Five than New Age)( but would be utterly miserable if the weather was bad (we had scorchig week in June)
mY boys nag and nag to go back but is it expensive for what it is - though we did get our money's worth in free trout
It's a fab art of the world.
I should point out that we are slightly hippy campers by nature - it would NOT do for anyone who cannot cope with roughing it a little and cannot live without hair straighteners.
feel free to CAT me if you want specific answers to specific questions.

NappiesGalore · 24/02/2007 19:47

thanks for that FMF... funnily enough, I dont mind roughing it a bit, its dp whos the big pansy about it! hes been used to luxury for too long (tho comes from humble roots so i dont really get his problem. huff)

this is the man who chickened out of camping at glastonbury at the last moment and went and bought a motorhome instead fgs!

I did it. Don't do it.
It was dreadful; non existant facilities, toilets didn't work, the one shower was a filthy mud hut.
There were never enough ice blocks, there was no where to wash and dry clothes.
I know it sounds great in principle and that part of cornwall is lovely but the people we were with that were were so hacked off with the shitty facilities that they left early.
One couple said thay camped all the time, all over England and Europe and they had never been to such an awful but expensive site saying that even the most basic campsites in France were 5 star compared to this one and I can quite believe them.
We were in the family field, other fields didn't even have a toilet at all. The kids liked it because there were other children. When we went it was very, very wet all week and it was miserable because everything inside and out was constantly soaked. Go at your own peril.

filthymindedvixen · 25/02/2007 10:46

How old are your children? Think it's better if your children are older tbh. (mine were 4 and 7 and adored everything about the holiday) The lake is fenced off.

I will stress, our holiday was magical - only because the weather was so lovely, cooking, eating outisde over an open fire. etc. And we had the place totally to ourselves (June) so plenty of opportunity for us as a couple to (wink) enjoy the open spaces.

We wouln't do it again, because it is way too expensive for what it is and because we realise how weather dependant such a holiday is. So last year we rented a beautiful, child friendly cottage very nearby (we loved the area) and had home comforts with a lot of freedom.

NappiesGalore · 25/02/2007 13:16

hmmm, POV's most welcome there kitty and fmf. it does look quite like it would be heaven or hell and massively weather dependent.

SO fmf, where is it you find these child friendly cottages/villas/whatever?? do you have some inside info, or should i just give up the idea of a luxury holiday until the bairns are a bit older. say, 7 upwards?

OP posts:
filthymindedvixen · 25/02/2007 13:39

Ah, well itf it's luxury and with children, I'm not the best person to ask! (I gave up on the first years ago as our wallets can't expand enough)
So as someone who can't bear being herded along with the masses (whether it be Mark Warner or Butlins) we find self-catering suits us best.
Last year, We stayed here

but again, not sure how relaxing it would be with very small children (although they ca arrange a babysitter now and again.

We had a beautiful holidy, but it's not luxurious or stylish, very clean, comfortable, well appointed and friendly though.

If you have more money than us (and most people do ) there have been some sumptious-looking places linked on MN in Cornwall recently....hope someone else can help

NappiesGalore · 25/02/2007 14:28

fmf, that place looks gorgeous. and am with you 100% on the masses thing... am tempted by places with childcare, but i havnt tried it yet so no idea if its really my cup of tea...

nappies, our tippi blew open at the top in the middle of our second to last night there. It was pissing down as it had been all week and we couldn't get hold of the warden to fix it. So we were frozen and soaking wet. We left when we got up that morning, as did most of the campsite.
That part of Cornwall is really beautiful though and the locals are really lovely. Tintagel is spectacular.

NappiesGalore · 25/02/2007 14:39

kitty - sounds like you had a really horrible time!
but thatnks for the honest opinions... and the tip on the area. we must get down there sometime.

OP posts:
Maudy · 28/02/2007 17:13

I went to a pagan wedding there last year. It was truly magical and the kids had the best time.

BUT.... it was very expensive for camping and I can imagine that if the weather is bad it would be a nightmare. Only good thing would be that you can cook inside your tipi and they are much roomier than a normal tent. Agree that the facilities are very basic and i'm not sure we could have done more than a couple of nights there.

If only you could book good weather along with your tipi....
