Looking at the forecast I'd be postponing for any South Wales or south west locations until Sunday. Those winds will be challenging to say the least!

We're away next Thursday for 5 days so I'm hoping to be back to glorious sunshine by then!

TommyandGina · 18/08/2016 23:30

Dickory, we're planning on..

Monkey sanctuary
Sunset at lands end
Boat trip if I can find a wheelchair accessible one
Camel trail if they fix their wheelchair accessible bike
Padstow/Bude
Newquay
Truro itself
Walking some of the coast path

Shock and that's just my list...

So much for a break!

tommyandgina try contacting sailability at Mylor. They are a charity that offer sailing in adapted boats for people with disabilities. Even if they can't help with what you want, they may be able to suggest something.

Nope, have wusses out and rebooked for next weekend. Now trying to come up with alternative fun plan for disappointed 4yo... Good luck those who are persevering!

SocksRock · 18/08/2016 23:49

Camping at Rewind festival in Henley... I'm a bit apprehensive if I'm honest!

TommyandGina · 18/08/2016 23:50

Thank you Thornybird Flowers** will call them tomorrow

Tommy I was reading this thread out of curiosity as our plans for this weekend may be scuppered by the weather forecast & I spotted your post. I think you're going to struggle to find a wheelchair accessible boat trip. The first problem is you usually step from the quayside across & down into the boat which a wheelchair user wouldn't be able to do and the angle is usually such that I'm not sure a ramp would work; there is then the question of safety on board as the boats are usually quite narrow and I'm not sure it would be possible to have the wheelchair in many places and, even if it was, that may block evacuation routes and it may be impossible to evacuate the wheelchair user (from what I remember, boats used on boat trips tend to have fairly basic "rafts" which are just flat sheets & have nothing to hold a wheelchair or to secure it to).
It isn't really a compromise but it may be possible for you to go on the King Harry Ferry as a foot passenger. You'd need to do it around high tide (10.30ish on Monday & an hour later each day) so that the slip way isn't too steep or too slippy. You can cross in the car (as most people do) but the crossing only takes a few minutes so it may be easier to do it as a foot passenger rather than get in & out of the car. The crew are usually nice & helpful but (understandably) concerned about health & safety so it may be worth ringing them in advance.

We're off to the Battle of Bosworth Anniversary weekend. Weather warnings in place for gale strength winds on Friday/Saturday but its looking clear on Sunday.
Any tips on putting tents up in gale force winds? Think I'm going to have a quick look for a B&B locally for at least Friday night. Blush

Am camping in Wales now. Sheltered site so should be ok. I survived 60 mph winds on exposed site in Scotland last year. 40mph? Pah!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/08/2016 22:33

Where are you Tiggy!

We're in south wales and it's all still quite calm. Due to get significantly windier in the early hours....

Bapple · 19/08/2016 23:02

We're here camping in Cornwall - been here a week. Last night was stormy, very windy but all fine - just not a lot of sleep. Sunny all day today and been on the beach for most of it (got a great wind tan!). Winds gusting again tonight but we are well pegged down. Forecast not good for tomorrow but fine from Sunday onwards. The forecast changes so quickly down here anyway Smile

Ineedmorepatience · 19/08/2016 23:03

For anyone with a pop up tent who is worried now by previous comments and picture, we have had no problems camping in some very strong winds in our pop ups!

Yes they flex a lot and flatten down sometimes but they always pop back up again, the beauty of them is that the poles are bendy so they dont snap, just peg it down well and dont add a porch and you will be fine.

My pop up stood up when 3 others tents around it were trashed in a storm once, I lost my vango porch which was tied onto it but no damage to the tent at all.

Good luck to anyone camping this weekend!Wine

Ineedmorepatience · 19/08/2016 23:07

Meant to say, as others have said use your car as a wind break, getnit as close to the tent on the side the wind is coming from as you can without running your guy ropes over!

We still use this technique with our caravan awning in rough weather .

Inertia · 20/08/2016 07:08

Rough night here, 2 am emergency pole repair. Wind has picked up after a lull, and no sign of it easing.

lljkk · 20/08/2016 07:43

Not camping, but going to cottage in the Lake District. Long windy drive over hills & then 3 days of rain forecast. Oh Joy.

TiggyOBE · 20/08/2016 08:41

Windy here in Snowdonia. Not to bad at tent level. Had no sleep all night though.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 20/08/2016 10:11

Oh no I need I hope you all managed it through the nigh with not too much damage didn't sound nice outside

OP posts:
Inertia · 21/08/2016 08:21

We ended up coming home yesterday, didn't think the tent would survive another night.

ChunkyMcBitch · 21/08/2016 08:45

Most of the tenters on the camp sites near me (North Wales coast) had either gone home or been forced to when their tents ended up in the bin. High Spring tides at the moment too, trains were off for a while yesterday so it has been a pretty wild couple of days. If you can stick it out though the forecast for next week is pretty good.
A tip I saw was parking your car in front of the opening of your tent, it deflects the wind apparently and stops the whoosh effect when opening your flaps Wink

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/08/2016 09:11

Hope you've all survived with intact kit.

Inertia · 21/08/2016 18:36

We did try that Chunky, but whooshing flaps were the least of our problems :)

We are going camping this week (Tuesday to Thursday) in Sussex with my six-year old and two other families and their kids. My DD can get frightened of things pretty easily but is keen to try camping. I have been before in my younger days pre. kids but many, many, many years ago. My worry is the prediction of thunder storms for Wednesday night/Thursday morning. I am unsure whether to abandon the trip on Wednesday afternoon and head back to the safety of the house in London on Wednesday evening before the storms kick off. One night under the stars may well be enough! Anyone else going ahead with camping this week? Anyone camped with children during a thunder/lightning? Tips appreciated.
