Tell me about your favourite campsite please!

I am struggling to find a campsite so would like to hear about your favourites!

My dream campsite would have big pitches, clean facilities, accept dogs, allow campfires, have space for kids to run around so I can drink wine in peace and be near water of some sort. Doesn't seem too much to ask but have spent hours on UKcampsites!

We just came back from burrowhayes farm. It was really nice. The camping pitches are on a slope, but that was literally the only downside. Nice clean facilities, shop on site and a shallow lake for exploring.

Neathergong nr canterbury. Lovley flat site lots of room .allows camp fires dogs .clean and plentiful showers/toilets. Surrounded by rivers and a few large ponds and lakes which the DC spent ages fishing at.

Wardley Hill in Norfolk and Walkers Cottage near Hay on Wye, Ardnamurchan point on the West Coast of Scotland and Glenbrittle on Skye. Upper Booth in the Peaks, all campsites I rate and have been to more than once. All fairly basic with plenty of room (UB has less room / more campers than the others).

For a tiny site Scaldbeck Cottage in North Norfolk-only takes 12 campers but only has one loo/shower, right on the marshes.

I always book campsites near or on rivers.

There are a couple of beautiful campsites in Clitheroe along the river Ribble.

But my absolute favourite is the Old Post Office in Holmrook, I don't think they allow campfires though.

Fisherground in Eskdale is a nice site, has water (more of a stream and a pond), plenty of space, and allows campfires but the facilities are minging.

Fforest Fields (admittedly only firepits) is blissful - gorgeous lakes to swim or kayak on/in, nice pitches, loads of room, fab facilities

Hardwick Parks near Witney - everything except the fires. Really clean facilities, big lake with watersports and swimming. Full size football pitch (away from the tents). Not noisy.

Another vote for fforest fields in mid-Wales. Dog friendly, lakes for swimming, fire pits, beautiful surroundings.

Glen brittle? Gosh, we nearly blew away across the loch there!

Eweleaze sounds like your ideal, not 100% sure on the dog thing though.

For group camping weekends we like Sandymouth near Bude. Close to beautiful NT beach the views are fabulous. It's just a big field near on the edge of a caravan park which is a trek up a hill for the indoor pool and playground. There's a clubhouse if you fancy that sort of thing. We always have a pint while the kids enjoy the disco.

It's not a cool camping kind of place but we've had a great time snuggled around the fire pit looking out to sea. You are totally unaware of the caravans up the hill but grateful for the pool when it rains.

Highs and Creek in Stiffkey, Norfolk is good, and by the marshes and coast path. Not sure about fires and dogs as we don't do them.

We went to Eweleaze several years ago and it was horribly, horribly overcrowded.

Open fires, overlooking dolphins playing in Cardigan Bay. Relaxed & informal. Heaven in warm weather.

Narrow railway bridge to go under to get in so not ideal for caravans but cars and small campers are fine. Spent a great weekend there with DH and want to take the kids now they're a bit older. Not sure it's toddler friendly.

Lings meadow on Suffolk Norfolk border is gorgeous. Pitches mown in a wild meadow with paths between, pitch black skies, owners have built an outdoor pizza oven so you can cook pizza on site under the stars!

Contentious I know but Wowo in East Sussex is our fave. I've heard complaints about facilities but I have always found them to be well maintained and enough even when a full site. What we like: non designated pitches, ground fires with benches around, endless woodland, stream running through the site, 2 hrs max from London. In my (humble) opinion, these guys make the fairly "low rule" camping appear seemless. There is clearly a well organised infrastructure in the background. I usually go there on my own with 2 children but have also been recently in a massive group and for me it always works. I often ask the kids if we should go elsewhere but they always want to come back (we are here at the moment btw). It's like having a second home in the country

Whatever you do don't go to Wowo if it has been raining - absolutely crap, no drainage and it turns into a massive bog. A tractor had to drag me out twice and everything was covered in thick claggy mud. Awful. I can see how it would be lovely in the dry though!

Hmm yes Titsy it can get a bit muddy. Lucky for you they have a tractor! We are here right now and expecting rain tomorrow so maybe then I won't be so positive

Quick return to this thread to say a massive thankyou for the Fforest fields recommendation. We arrived on saturday and were meant to come home today but are staying on until friday. Hands down the best campsite we've ever been to!!

Wonderone, what's at Cae Du? It's been a possible site for me for a while.

I've developed a wind allergy due to a rather exciting bit of camping last year. Is it really as exposed as the pics look? It there a shop near? Friendly? Relaxed?

Torrent walk campsite in Dolgellau is nice, bear to Barmouth for beach, allows dogs and campsites, stacks of freedom for the kids (ours usually disappear into the woods), near to Coed y Brenin for mountain biking and walking, allows campfires. Does get busy at peak times.
