Looking for a campsite in or by a great forest, in Britain

I have been very busy this year and am dreaming of a remote campsite, near or by a lovely forest, quiet and ideally so that we can have campfire (thin isn't a must).

Can anyone suggest place like that? We are planning to camp end of August/early September. Is that too late for Scotland?

We live in London but I am prepared to drive far away if I can be close to nature.

DP and I had a great trip to Kielder forest a few years ago (a bit far from London maybe). I can't remember the site but it was a lovely area, with a bike trails, a reservoir, great walks and pubs.

New Forest is fab :-)

NameChanger22 · 22/07/2016 21:42

Can anyone recommend one for me?

I'd like it be near a great beach and a nice town with some good restaurants and and also a railway station close by?

Great Langdale in the Lakes is amazing

There are a number of beaches fairly near Hollands Wood - Avon Beach is about 30 mins - and there is a riverside bank very close by where lots of people picnic on sunny days. It is close to a number of fairly decent hotel restaurants, including the Pig. Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst are nice largish villages and Lymington is a very pretty coastal town with boutiques and cafes and restaurants.

herecomesthsun · 23/07/2016 05:44

oh and Brockenhurst has a surprisingly well connected railway station

Magor Farm in Cornwall (near Cambourne, they have a website): a field with excellent toilet/shower block and a couple of hookups and a couple of swings. Dog-friendly, child-friendly, peaceful and blissful. Absolutely my favourite campsite in the whole country and the scene of many many happy family holidays. I'd be there now if I could.

Grange in the Lake District. I don't think you can light fires in the Lakes any more because of previous fires destroying large areas of land.
Scotland can be hit and miss at that time of year. The Moray coast can be good due to the Gulf Stream.

Look at the coolcamping websites.www,coolcamping.co.uk . There are some fantastic websites appearing on here. Some are really small with just a few pitches and we've never had a bad site from here. Lots of reviews and recommendations too on here.

North Lees in the Peak District is lovely. Accessible by car, surrounded by woods, half an hour easy walk to nearest village with a Spar, One Stop and camping stores etc. Swimming pool cafe in Hathersage does the best fish and chips. Campsite run by National Trust so no fires unfortunately but prices are reasonable. Lots of lovely walks, not too difficult, Robin Hood's cave and Little John's grave within walking distance. Feels totally isolated from the world, it's beautiful!

Yy to Keilder.
And most of Northumberland, tbh.
Huge dark skies.
Huge clean beaches.
Tons of Castles, good pubs, nice little shops.
And very few people (and the ones that are there are friendly).

What's not to like? Grin

DailyMailEthicalFail · 25/07/2016 01:15

Just been at Glenmore though, and it was mobbed.
Mobbed, I tell you.
Loch Morlich beach was like ruddy Benidorm Sad

Ashurst New Forest site is nice, we've been a couple of times. It's one of the Camping in the Forest /Forestry ones in the New Forest. Walks straight into the Forest or to Lyndhurst. It can feel a bit busy though in my opinion. But if you get there early you might find a nice clearing in the woods so not packed in with all the huge tents trying to squeeze into the open field!

Acres Down, again in the New Forest, is a small basic site we visited a few years ago. It was brilliant for access to the forest. Nothing fancy, just a field, couple of loos and a shower from what I remember. The farmhouse did cream teas and breakfasts I think.

Used to camp at one in Verwood (edge of New forest) called Hillside - basic facilities but run by a lovely couple who would bring out a tray with hot tea and biccies on your arrival! Most welcome after a long car journey. Also a good site in Sixpenny Handley (sp?) near Salisbury. No forest/trees but far enough from big towns/cities to give lovely night skies assuming no clouds! The village had all you could want - pub, village shop and a super butchers!

Try thetford forest campsite. Great, easy trip up the m11/a11 for you...and it's right in thetford forest, loads to do. And you can have a camp fire!

girlinacoma · 25/07/2016 21:38

We stayed here www.mallinson.co.uk/contact-us.html

Lovely selection of treehouse, shepherds huts and yurts plus a communal outside kitchen and a communal yurt with log burner and sofas.

Each accommodation has it's own log burner, shower and loo plus an outside area with fire pit.

I don't think they allow children which could or could not be an extra bonus Grin

You can also join a wood whittling workshop onsite and carve your own spoons!

Stokey · 26/07/2016 15:59

Namechanger we recently stayed at Hare & Hounds near Rye and so Camber Sands.

It's a small campsite, not wild, but just two fields and no caravans. You can rent log burners. Rye is very easy top get to and is a lovely town, and Camber Sands is a stunning beach.
