What do you do for a toilet in a tent?

So in previous years we have taken a potty for the children to use at night in a tent or emergency. They are now 5 plus and potty too small.
So what do others do for toilets at night in a tent. Looked at those portaloos but they do seem very big for camping and packing in a car. Any other solutions / products out there that doesn't involve simply weeing into a bucket as not sure 5 year old we go for that!

We use a Kampa Khazi too. I have 4 dcs between 2 & 12 so they definitely need it for night time wees. It even has a little loo roll holder which is handy.

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 29/01/2016 14:24

walk to the toilets.
have uglycrocs for toilet/shower walks.

We got this for last summer. I was 14 weeks pg and wanted to be able to go quickly.

I think I only used it twice. Mostly I went to the loo block. Was good having it as an emergency loo though.

Dh and 3 X ds each have wee bottles that we empty the next morning. Just a wide neck drinking bottle with a screw top. For boys they are perfect. I have to do the walk to the loo in the night or when the kids were younger I did the wee in the disposable nappy. I do find that if I double void i can last the night.

RaisingSteam · 04/02/2016 20:01

Only boys so they used to pee in the hedge when they were little. Otherwise walk to loo with head torch. We have never ever had any kind of in-tent facility - I did't realise so many people did!

lavendersun · 04/02/2016 20:39

We have a bog in a bag for our tipi tent, Pett toilet for the dutch tent ..... and I will have to trot to the loo when cycle camping. I always get up in the night, I am the reason we have 'in tent' facilities Smile.

DH bought this for this kids. I thought he was mad, but it is a pretty smart design, and sturdy enough for an adult not that I've tried it, oh no.

popaloo

Raising - same here, I had no idea. I found by trial and error that so long as I don't drink beer in the evening I don't need to get up, and we've been lucky with the DCs in that respect too. Finding food that everyone will eat is our problem.

VeganCow · 05/02/2016 12:40

Always used a nappy in a carrier bag in a bucket, which is then tied up and binned but after reading this will drop the bucket and just wee in the nappy, so much easier and one less thing to pack.

willconcern · 05/02/2016 12:56

For a wee in the night? Wee on the grass! I do this too - there's no-one wandering about looking at 2 am usually. For anything more, walk to the toilets.

Maybe I am really skanky. It wouldn't even cross my mind to take a toilet-type thing or bucket for weeing in at night.

dannyboyle · 07/02/2016 22:33

Only just seen later comments on this. We do need some something and getting a kampa khazi type thing I think. For those of you with boys, great, but we have two girls. Won't use potty as now think they are too old, ditto weeing into nappies. This thread has def made me think about other options though, mainly due to packing size. Traipsing to the loo block fine but faff of coats and boots etc if raining.

It's not that mine are boys (one of each) but they had stopped needing to go to the loo in the night by the time they were about 4 or 5. DH is the only one who regularly seems to need to.

I am a woman. I wee on the grass in the night when camping. Why is this only a solution for boys?

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 08/02/2016 21:33

Bucket and chucket.

Palomb · 08/02/2016 21:36

Bucket with a carrier bag with a handful of cat litter in it. Out it in the bin in the morning.

Traipsing to the toilet block in the middle of the night is not for me.

ghostyslovesheep · 08/02/2016 23:01

wee on the grass (near your or other peoples tents??) okay if you don't mind that but changing tampons? I need my Bog-in-a-bag

I camp on my own with 3 kids - I don't like leaving them alone at 2am to trudge through damp grass to deal with my period - plus it's warm in the tent!

HarrietSchulenberg · 08/02/2016 23:08

Hedge or bush after dark for me and 3xdses. Headlamp walk to toilets for poo or hang on till morning. I am not faffing about with emptying and cleaning pissy buckets/bags.

Wolfiefan · 08/02/2016 23:10

Do NOT piss on the grass where other people are camping
Use the toilet?
4/5 trips a night. That sounds unusual.

AnnPerkins · 11/02/2016 11:47

I agree Wolfie. I'll happily pee behind a bush in the great outdoors if the situation demands it but not in a campsite.

I used to love watching my son when he was a toddler, exploring round our tent, poking around in bushes and stalking imaginary animals. I loved that camping gave him the freedom to roam a bit and get dirty.

Then I would remember that the grass and bushes were probably soaked with some stranger's piss and it hadn't rained since Envy Horrible.

NettleTea · 15/02/2016 22:11

this is a great product. we pop one up in a toilet tent and use it when we run forest school sessions. One bag with the composting stuff in it lasts a whole session, and when we went camping it was fine for an overnight

iceyrider16 · 15/03/2016 18:43

We use a bucket with some wood pellets in it like these
www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk/product/full_pallet?gclid=CPTnxayrw8sCFeUV0wodBOIJwQ

Just line a bucket with a plastic bag then pop a few handfuls in bucket with a little water (about 500ml) and then use! Need to put little water on as it starts to break them down making them more absorbent. They don't smell so no need to change daily and if you need just chick another handful of pellets in. End of trip take bag out and bin. Sorted! Ps a bag costs about £5 for 15kg! So will last ages!
