Has to be dog friendly. Preferably with a small play area but not essential.

Camping virgins - we bought our first tent today, very excited, now trying to figure out what else we absolutely have to have because there isn't much budget left Shock

We are fatties - so sleeping bags are they an issue if you are on the larger side? Not all the childrens ones seem to have a warmth rating, what should i go for?

I am a 'large' camper too. I have a mans xl sleeping bag and it's fine. I do have to get help zipping me in but I'm not sure if that cos I am large or uncoordinated. For kids ( and adults) yes get a warmth rated one and the best your money can bye - being cold at night is miserable. We take duvets and pillows too for comfort and if it's to hot you ca just use duvet.

Any ideas on where to go? i have looked on pitchup.com. DP wants to go further afield but i think its sensible to stay local for the first foray

I really like Welsummer nr Maidstone - there are fire pits by all the pitches and there is a small wood at the side of the site. The kids can run around without going too far. You can pitch in the wooded part too. Some nice walks around the area (maps at the campsite ) that include a pub as a reward at the end!

Thanks, im particularly liking the pub idea!

There's crowborough on East Sussex/Kent border near tunbridge wells

How about Forgewood near Eridge. Not far from Tunbridge Wells, just over into East Sussex.

Oops. Apologies for the double post

Our two favourites in Kent

The Warren, near Folkestone
Nethergong, near Canterbury.

But I'm afraid they'll probably both be booked up already for this yearSad

We also like Heron's Park at Lydd. Much less picturesque, but very friendly, lots of space and near some lovely places. And we've got very short notice pitches there even in high season. And you can go pond dipping. If you do go there, don't panic as you drive in- it looks as if you're going into an industrial estate, but you're not! We nearly turned straight round again the first time we went!

Try Chafford Park in Kent, or St Ives Farm is nice. Both a nice walk from pubs.. The first is definitely dog friendly. No play area but a couple of rope swings and lots of room and long grass to run around and hide in.

I read Foreword was shut at the moment but if not it is great.

The warren is great

Forge wood my fave but closed due to licence issues. Wowo or is great although in high season would be very busy and possibly quite a festival atmosphere - not my cup of tea but I love it out of season. Welsummer nice and quite small. Sleeping bags, we have gelert pods which are oval shaped.
