Any tips for camping with a tiny?

We're going camping in France for two weeks from the end of July, when the DC will be 6, 4 and 3.5 months. We've done a few family friendly weekend festivals but this will be our first ever proper camping trip.

Baby is breastfed so don't have to worry about food. At least one campsite has baby baths. We currently cosleep but assume inflatable mattress won't be safe for him, so he and I will probably share a SIM on top of a duvet - does that sound ok?

Anything else I need to think about/any other tips? Thanks Smile

Bumping up for you. We are camping at half term with a 6yr DS and 5m DS, so also interested.
Am thinking layers for sleeping, my friend has lent me a pop up travel cot that has a SIM. Also will use tent carpet under for warmth.
Check out comfy breastfeeding positions in advance, I hate airbeds so not sure what will be comfy for me yet. Going to test out the camping chairs for that soon.

Also- laundry tablets, playmat, hat for chilly evenings, sling.

SIMs are quite narrow. It is definitely worth checking beforehand if you will be able to sleep comfortably. If not maybe gaffer tape two together or buy a double one if that is an option. Pop up travel cots are handy too, useful for naps and for the baby sleeping before you retire for the night.

It won't matter so much if you are sleeping together, but layers for the baby are a good idea - vest, babygro and fleece onesie works well, with a hood or a hat if the night is cold (though you will probably be ok if you heading to southern France). We bought a sheepskin rug from IKEA for DD and that acted as extra insulation for the mattress. Again, this is only useful for if/when the baby is on his own. A SIM on top of a duvet should be great insulation otherwise.

You will (hopefully) need plenty of shade in France so, if you don't already have one, I would invest in one of those beach style tents, pop up ideally, so you always have somewhere shady for the baby to nap wherever you are. A decent sized one will allow the other two DC to get out of the sun too.

This is exactly what I came on here to ask! We are planning to take our 1 yr old camping for the first time at half term. Not too worried about sleep as she'll go in a travel cot but what on earth do we do with her while we are putting up the tent?
Also what is a SIM please?

cherrypiesally · 13/05/2015 05:27

SIM is a self inflating mattress.

Whilst putting up the tent you could leave her in her car seat watching you with some toys to hand. Once the tent is up she could crawl around with inside during the pegging out.

We're going in half term with a six week old Hmm

Any sign of rain and I'm cancelling!

You could also use your travel cot like a playpen? Ds used to sit happily in his pram - or the ikea highchair with some toys - for a short while watching us then one of us would take over pegging out etc while the other entertained him. Or cross your fingers they're asleep when you get there Wink

When ours were tiny we had a mini inflatable paddling pool that was not only great for playing but doubled up as a baby bath (in the tent if very chilly, outside if a lovely balmy evening).

They used to sleep in their normal grobag on a SIM next to mine and then I added/removed blankets as required.

OP have you considered doing a practice run for a weekend before July?

Pointlessfan · 13/05/2015 20:22

Thanks everyone! The half term trip is the practice run! We are hoping if it goes well then we can go for longer in the summer hols. We are only going about an hour away from home too in case it is a total disaster!
I think we will strap her in the pushchair to watch us and see how we get one. If that doesn't work then using the travel cot as a playpen is an excellent idea.
Thanks for the bath tip too - I'm a bit worried about how she will cope with the shower. The campsite we are going to has a large family shower so that will help.

A lovely picnic for when you arrive. Your DH can put the tent up whilst you supervise the kids just getting you to help when needed.

Pointlessfan · 14/05/2015 22:03

Ah yes, food never fails to occupy DD!

NewNameFor2015 · 16/05/2015 22:37

Yes we did it last year with a 3yo, 2yo and 8 week old!! I set up a picnic blanket, gave my dds lunch while dh and I set up camp. Stopped half way through to feed ds and dh blew up air beds! It was great fun (for the kids, I was a little stressed having decided to go camping at 11am that morning, packed, drove 1.5 hours away and set up camp!)
This year we are planning 4 camping trips and I am much more organised!
My advice for camping with littilies is to go with the flow, go to bed when they do as you'll be waking up when they do! W
