Sleeping bag recommendations

We have most of the gear. Yet to do our first camping trip. Hoping to get away over easter/school holidays. We are very excited. But trying to choose a sleeping bag is a minefield. There is me, hubby (both average build), and our dd aged 6. Any recommendations would be gratefully received. There are so many out there! Thanks Smile

Do you and your DH want a double sleeping bag?

For me, I like a square-ended , or 'envelope' bag, not a mummy or cocoon shape - I like as much space as possible. Also, I would avoid anything with a nylon / shiny lining - go for cotton, or 'soft touch'.

I find the Vango 2 season bags plenty warm enough in the UK spring, summer and early autumn, but loads of people seems to want something warmer. For me the Vango Harmony Grande is an ideal bag for an adult - with a fleece blanket to put on top if it is cold. The Vango Ambience has a much lower 'ideal' temperature for use, and has an optional zip-on duvet so that you can make it 2 or 3 season. So warmer - and mre expensive.

You want zip baffles - nothing worse than feeling the cold zip against you - and having a draft come in through the zip.

For your 6 year old -the same thing - DS had a 'Junior' bag, but you can just fold the end under.

If you have a Blacks near you they have loads on display and the staff are very knowledgeable.

Buy a quality brand - don't get one from Halfords etc.

Cheaper through GoOutdoors than Blacks, though!

Outwell campion lux has good reviews. Agree with avoiding the polyester lining.

Yes, that looks good - especially if you are concerned about being chilly.

Amateur campers here...

We had Hi-Gear ones from Go Outdoors with an extra fleece over the top and they were fine and not expensive (and actually too warm). DS had an adult sleeping bag and we just turned the bottom under rather than buying a junior one.

Warm pyjamas and cosy socks worth packing!

You can get cotton liners which act as another layer. I got one because it was really cheap. I have a mummy shaped bag and the zip was the wrong side for the bag IYKWIM. For that reason it was only a couple of quid. I just use it inside out and it makes a lot of difference in keeping me warm. You'd never think it would. Don't forget to put as much below you as on top.
I second the fluffy socks. And a woolly hat. I'm all class.

Thank you everyone for your replies. You have definitely narrowed down the options. Camping here we come!

I have a Gelert sleeping pod which is egg shaped and has lots of space. The only thing I don't like is that it is polyester inside and I would must prefer cotton or polycotton mix. For this reason I only use it for UK camping. For France I take a duvet.
