Apologies if you replied to my other post but we've decided the vendee is not for us, too touristy. So we're being ideas on where to visit. As a general question, where in your opinion makes the best family holiday in France?

Carcassonne is lovely.

Mintyy · 17/03/2015 22:41

Languedoc Rousillon. As near to the Spanish border as possible.

Mintyy · 17/03/2015 22:41

Aha! amusing cross post.

millimat · 18/03/2015 07:00

Oh and why you think that please!

Gosh yes, I would second Carcassonne - beautiful mediaeval town.

Also St Emilion for the same reason, and for the wine. In fact that whole area round Bordeaux I love. We are going to Biscarosse this year - site is by a lake and yet close enough to the Atlantic coast which has the waves you need for surfing and body boarding.

lk26 · 18/03/2015 10:15

Arcachon basin on the Atlantic Coast. Fab beaches. Lovely towns. Near Bordeaux which is beautiful.

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 18/03/2015 10:16

Mind you, Carcassonne and St Emilion are VERY touristy. If that is what you are hoping to avoid, maybe heading over to the east of France even into the mountains would be better? (Although I have never been that way so can't comment - we always go touristy. St Tropez last year!)

IpsyUpsyDaisyDo · 19/03/2015 13:09

We had a wonderful time in Gorges de Verdon, near Castellane in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in southeastern France. It's inland but on the Verdon river & lakes. It's just beautiful for walking, river swimming & rafting, spectacular scenery... We stayed here

millimat · 21/03/2015 07:44

Those areas do sounds lovely, but we don't want to travel that far. Think 7 hours max drive from Calais. Our current thinking is between the Loire and the Dordogne?
Where's all our other mn French campers Hmm?

it totally depends on what you like doing, weather preferences, mode of transport, do you like mountains, cliff, beaches, forests, lakes, cities and culture, countryside and vineyards etc etc
France is a big diverse place.

Branleuse · 21/03/2015 07:56

the Jura is a beautiful area, not as touristy as most brits head south west

millimat · 21/03/2015 08:34

We went to the Jura last year. Loved the area - about as touristy as I'd choose - but unfortunately had truly awful weather Sad I know it was unusual but it had put me off going back to that area.
That's why I'm intrigued where other people like.

(We always tend to do lakes and mountains type holidays so after the constant rain last year are looking for a change.)

Alps in the summer if you like outdoorsy stuff. Lots of exciting walks, activities like canyoning and rafting and cable cars. And tartiflette!

La Clusaz, Morzine, Annecy are fab. Smile

WoweeZowee · 21/03/2015 20:31

Oops! Sorry missed your post about distance from Calais... Alps might be a bit far?

Branleuse · 21/03/2015 21:38

all of france had relatively miserable weather last summer. We were in the languedoc in august and it was cloudy cool and rainy We were in the Jura in May on the other hand and apart from one or two cooler days it was great weather.

The year before we were in the Jura in summer, round Ornans/Besancon and it was 35/36 degrees and scorching

Sazorchard31 · 21/03/2015 21:40

We've done the Loire valley a couple of times and loved it!

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/03/2015 21:40

Pyrenees or Alps for me,please.
Next in line is Provence.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/03/2015 21:41

Oh sorry,too far.
Loire is lovely -pack your insect repellant though.....

Sazorchard31 · 21/03/2015 21:42

We did Jura in June 2013 and it was 35, absolutely roasting! Loire in June 2 different years one was like and English summer (rain and Sun but not hot) and the other was 30c and gorgeous. Just luck!

LittleEsmeWeatherwax · 21/03/2015 21:57

Blatant hijack but I'm driving from the Chunnel to Provence in the summer. I have a week to get there and hoping for a couple of camping stops. Any suggestions? Annecy is on my list but I'd be grateful for any input.

OP have you thought about Noirmoutier? And, as much as I adore the Dordogne, it's very British in parts. Aubettere sur Dronne 20 years ago was a place of perfection but too many of us have bloody moved in! Grin

LittleEsmeWeatherwax · 21/03/2015 22:00

Oh and I LOVE Normandy but weather can be unreliable. So beautiful though.

Quenelle · 22/03/2015 09:03

We love the Drome and Provence. You need at least two weeks for it though - hence our first foray into Brittany this year...

Branleuse · 22/03/2015 10:10

it aint that quick to drive to bretagne either tbh, unless you do the brittany ferry but thats expensive and takes ages sailing, but less time driving

Muskey · 22/03/2015 10:18

We really love Brittany and usually stay in a very quiet village called lambel which is near to Carnac (if you like standing stones you will love Carnac) but also has a fantastic beach. I don't think its too touristy. We also like cognac but that might be a bit too far
