Buying a motorhome - any parking and other tips?

We live 3 hours from the coast and have DS3 and DS 3 months and finally decided to get a motorhome. 2 'problems' - where do we park it? (We live in town and although we have 2 parking spaces, I expect neighbours would take offence...) - and how/where do kids sleep best in motorhome? I would be grateful for any tips please if anyone has had similar (first world) problems?

You could use proper storage - put your postcode in here to find your nearest one - they cost about £350-£400 ish a year.

You are able to park it on your drive and no-one can do anything about it, if it is a new build and there is a covenant (some have changed it to cover vans as well as caravans) you are legally allowed to park it (as any vehicle) on the road. So neighbours should be careful what they wish for if they kick up a fuss!!

Motorhomes as with most things all depend on budget, literally the world is your oyster.

I don't suppose you are near Birmingham newquay? (or is the clue in your name.) it's just there is the caravan and camping show at the NEC Birmingham this week, which is a good time to view an awful lot all on one day.

You need to decide on what sort you want - put your requirements in here, birth and seatbelt etc and see what it kicks out to get an idea on what layouts there are available to suit you. and then you can decide on the sort of thing you may want.

also if you want over 3.5 tonnes - check your driving licence and see if you are eligible to drive class C1. It used to be an automatic give, but they have now stopped that so it will depend on when you passed your test.Smile

If not, then obviously you need to factor that into your search

Furball - thank you SO much for all the advice and tips - that's amazingly helpful. We are off to see a few locally today so that will really help. So excited!

Are you sure you want a motorhome and not a caravan?

I used to have a camper van and while it was nice it became a total money pit. An extra vehicle to service, insure, tax, mot, engine repairs, bodywork repairs. Cost of fuel was terrible as mpg was rubbish. You'd go away in it and struggle to park it in places while out and about. On street parking in towns was near impossible and many carparks have height restrictions on them. If staying on a campsite it was a pita to have to pack everything away every morning so we could go out for the day In it.

I parked mine on my drive, couldn't care if the neighbours didn't like it. They never said anything.

Got a caravan now and may £280 for secure storage.

I had a pop top campervan when the DC were similar ages, we had some great holidays. Longest was 11nts in wet Cornwall.
Main issues were car seats (need 3 point seat belts in the back), nowhere for a cot to go, lack of storage. I ended up sleeping with DD in a Samsonite pop up cot in the lower double bed and DH and DS slept in the roof!
Guessing by 'motorhome' you mean something bigger which would be great. I love the look of Adria Twin 4, Autosleeper Quartet and other van conversions with small set of bunk beds for the kids.
At the moment we also have a caravan!! Stored locally for £30 a month. I do love it but still secretly hanker for the ease of a motorhome. We've rented a few different sizes over the years overseas pre DC and never had anything but great fun.
Good luck!

Thank you! The motorhome is the choice as we also had a campervan before (with DS up to 2 years) and now it's probably the only way DH can get back to surfing (unless he goes leaving me and dc at home. That ain't happening!). We figure that motorhome will make it easier for me with both of them on beach and afterwards.
I'm loving the idea of the Adria - that looks fantastic. We saw an Eldis auto quest 130 today which looked quite good. I hadn't realised until today that the need for 3 point seat belt means that the choice is relatively small.

It's always lovely looking at vans -but I was even more excited this time as icant wait to see our DS's face when he sees it :)

If any other tips spring to mind pls do let me know (I.e samsonsite cot - great idea!)

Thanks
