Outwell tent pitching help

I've recently bought an Outwell Glendale 5 and attempted to pitch it in the garden this afternoon. The problem I had was that I couldn't get the pins into the bottom of the poles - they seemed too tight a fit. The pins were covered in black plastic but that didn't look like it was supposed to come off. Am I doing something wrong? On the pitching videos the people just popped them in with no problems!

Have you definitely got the poles in the correct places? If you have then they may well loosen up. We struggled a lot the first time with our new canopy but it seems ok now.

Thanks for the reply! I think the poles were Ok as they're all the same. I'm not sure I was very clear in my op - the pins seem to big for the holes in the poles. is that the same as you had?

We struggled with this the first time we pitched our Outwell (not the same model). We found eventually that the straps that the pins are attached to have buckles on one side of the tent that allow the straps to be made a bit longer - once we did that, it was doable. HTH

Can't help but I'm interested to hear what you think of this tent. It looks great. We have the outwell Oakland XL with side extension and the whole thing has been discontinued and I think possibly the Glendale is the nearest to it.

Good luck with the pins.

I don't think op means the tautness of the straps for the pins. It seems to be the size of the pins that are the issue. Having said that it took us many times pitching to work out slackening the straps Blush

Thanks for all the replies. It is the size of the pins that seemed to be the problem. I couldn't even get one in on the first side let alone make the other side reach!
I was doing it myself so there is the possibility that I was doing something silly although I am a fairly practical person! If the weather Improves this weekend I'll try with dh and see if he gets on any better.

That sounds very strange. No that's not the same issue we had at all. Is it visible on the video what their pins look like?

leemur · 18/10/2014 17:17

The pitching video is just a generic one not specific to our model but their pins don't look the same. Dh had a shot today with the same result - the pins don't fit. At least it wasn't something I was doing wrong! I've posted on the outwell Facebook page and on uk campsite so hopefully someone will know.

We got that one and had a test pitch last weekend. We managed to get the pins into the bottom of the poles, it was a snug fit but went ok. It was tricky getting them in, but as mentioned above we put the non-adjustable side in first, then the adjustable side.

Could you post pics of the pins and where you are trying to insert them and I can see if I can work it out?

I love the tent hillbilly, I think it will be the perfect size for the four of us and it was pretty easy to pitch. Since it was a test pitch just to check all was there we only did the corner pegs, but I reckon we'll be able to do the whole thing pretty quickly. I definitely recommend two people to put the poles in.

We got an outwell monty 5p in spring and had the same issue.
I spoke to a guy at Outwell and it turns out the black sleeves on the pins shouldn't have been of there. They were left on after manufacture process.
I used pliers to yank them off. The ones that were stuck in the poles I used a drill to gently get them out... and it was much easier to put up.
We were disappointed at first as it wasn't the quality control we expected from outwell. But the tent has provided some fab holidays this summer.
