Thinking of going for a couple of nights but my favourite, Forgewood will be closed Hmm. Any recommendations for sites that allow fires within 2 hrs of london preferably? Town Farm is a possibility but it's very exposed and high up so not ideal for Autumn.

Prof I'd be interested in your Yorkshire recommendation....

profpoopsnagle · 28/09/2014 21:18

Yellow- The Hideaway. Been a couple of times and really like it.

Park farm, it's nothing like Forgewood, v large but you don't have to book and they allow campfires.

Wowo- bit more like Forgewood you have to book

That's been on my wishlist for a while prof so good to hear a positive recommendation :)

Thanks! I have been to Wowo before so that's a possibility. Park Farm also looks great.

We went to a site near Lewes this weekend just gone - Housedean Farm campsite www.housedean.co.uk/. It was lovely and right in the middle of the South Downs - we did a lovely 3 mile or so walk to a pub taken from a leaflet at reception.

They allow fires in already dug firepits and the views are gorgeous. Most people camp at the bottom of the field where it is flatter but the best views are at the top if you can take a bit of a slope - albeit it is a bit of an uphill stroll back from the (clean and well-maintained) loos. There is an open air shower too which was warm and powerful (although I think there are also a couple with roofs over them).

The only downside is there a constant hum of road/train noise. This is actually less noticeable at the bottom of the slope so you trade views and space to yourselves for increased noise. I found you tend to block it out most of the time only noticing occasionally but for some people it might be a deal breaker. Lots of space when we were there for the children to run around and play and not far from Brighton and other shingle beaches.

We will definitely be going back.

Ah that is interesting Frozen. I looked at Housedean earlier this year but ruled it out because DH did not like the look of the loos! I'm not so fussy and as he would prob not be coming I may look again. Thanks for reminding me. In the end we went to www.campingninja.com/alfristoncampingpark which was also great.

Somewhere in another country where there is warmth
Wink

Ooh hillbilly. That one does look lovely - I will save that up fopr next year I think. I doubt we will be camping again before next Easter at the earliest!

You can reassure your DH the loos at Housedean are great, at least they were spotless and constantly stocked with loo roll, hand soap and even paper hand towels last weekend. There are only four though I think so on a busy weekend that could cause an issue I guess.

hillbilly · 02/10/2014 12:28

I know Trout - I really must be losing my marbles! It may well not happen - depends on the weather.

Frozen - we went to Alfriston at Whitsun bank holiday and it was lovely. I saw a negative review recently on ukcampsite and the points they raised were valid but clearly worse than when we were there. They probably need to have a rule about noise.

Decided upon Wowo. They have quite a few woodland activities going on throughout the holidays Smile

In fact, call me a cheat but I got so tempted by the Gypsy wagon that I have booked it. So now I save about 4 hours of hard work and will be warm inside!
